Okay, so i am looking for a daily driver, recently only had Hondas, EF and EJ9. I cannot find any half decent EF's for sale, ideally 1.4 GL in tidy condition.

I have however found a nice looking EM2 Civic Coupe 130K, or another idea is a Peugot 306 D Turbo? this only has 90K on it.

Has anyone owned either of these? allthough the Civic Coupe has done more miles do you think it would be a better buy then the Peugot? reliability?

Any Thoughts, £1000 ish is all i want to pay. Not really feeling the EJ9 again more old school if poss.

Cheers

VW bora or a 306 are fine as a DD. I'd doubt the miles on the 306 though, very few have under 100k anymore. if you do go for a 306 try get one that hasnt been messed with, ie pump or turbo screwed at.

What engine is in the 306? If it is the old 1.9 then the fuel consumption is not going to be amazing, but the engine will far outlive the car. I had a Xsara with the same engine which was sitting at 280 000 miles when I sold it and it did not use any oil and started first time every time.

I have a 2.0l rover 45 tdi forsale, it has the reliable bmw engine so no headgasket problems does 60mpg+ good condition 132k but its a diesel so just run in. Has all extras aircon alloy wheels, pas, ew, em. Mot may tax till october. Let me know if this is any good to you. I have been using it as a daily and its been cracking. Loads of boot space, looks like the mb6 inside.

i drive a 307 HDi 110, awesome car only costs me £40 a week to commute and shop runs etc. 123K on it, had it 6 month fingers crossed no issues yet.

they usually piss out oil but they seem to go forever.

if you can, get the late HDi model 306 as the 1.9DT is less reliable and less economical.

The 1.9 TD is far more reliable than HDi, no fancy common rail injectors that can go wrong, a lot less electrics in general. Less economical - yes, less reliable - absolutely not. The XUD engine is imho one of the best to come out of France.
Have a look at Citroen Xsara too, no silly air suspension like some other Citroens (which is actually good but high maintenance which most people don't bother with) and is basically a twin car to the 306, they share a lot of components.

Daihatsu yrv is best car for under 1k, have a Toyota 1.3 engine and so easy on fuel adjustable everything best runaround I've ever had

I had a 306 1.9 tdi with 70k on it absoloutly loved it ! Great cars 2.0 hdi is meant to be the cheaper engine to run

The 1.7 EM2 engines very often go wrong. Also I wouldnt buy a 306 again. I had a 95 306 4 door 1.4. Fuel economy was ok but not as good as a 16 valve d series Honda engine.
But everytime was another mistake with the car. I had it for 7 years and there was no year I didnt spend a lot of money. Axle boots every 2 years, Taillights had electical corrosion so every bulb was glowing, heat exchanger leaky, engine and transmission leaky, headgasket is also very common to be leaky for example.
After a Clio V6 i am done with french cars :angry2:

Thanks guys, i do hear of probs with the 306 diesels, just always liked them since my mate brought a new one in 95, but it did start to fall apart at 60K
Maybe i will look for a Nice Civic again.

what about a mk4 golf tdi? great cars, good mpg, reliable and very well built. you can pick up an.earlier one for less than a grand.

Agreed :) Daihatsu car with Toyota engine. Awesome 1.3 twincam engine and they came turbo on some models.

I have the Daihatsu Sirion and its a great car. Better than a Micra anyway.

I have a facelift EK3 Hatchback and I love it as my daily.

1.5 VTEC-E
112bhp
45mpg on average
Bone stock, no one looks twice at it :nice:

I considered a boring diesel hatchback for a daily driver.

Bought an MX5 instead.

Best.
Decision.
Ever.

;)

I had one of these as a daily, bloody drink driver hit it when it was parked outside my house. Was a great car, nice relaxing drive and economical

Diesel luxobarge for the MFW.

I have a Saab, and gradualy all my friends have luxobarges. Three have 5 series, One an A4, one a lexus. (All diesels bar the lexus).

Hatches are expensive next to barges beyond a certain age.

Mines 180HP, 300lbft, 45mpg actual and would set you back £3500.
An old derv 320D can be £1500quid.

This is all well and good but it depends on your commute. I have a 60 miles round commute, I did have an E46 330Cd but sold it, that did around 40mpg average. I now have an Ibiza Sport (in name only) TDI 130 which cost £1500 with 96k and 12 months T&T, that does around 56mpg average which is a big saving over the beemer. It let me save up upgrade the weekend car so swings and roundabouts :)
