When I turn my headlights on when its running my stereo turns off and the rev counter drops right down and back again. Is this due to a faulty alternator not working properly

Very possible.
To check quickly;
Remove the negative cable from the battery while the car is running. If the vehicle stalls or dies more than likely the alternator is bad. Have it tested to be certain.

nice one i will have too try that one.

or just put all consumer items on, eg lights, blower fan, radio on and check with with a multimeter. if its under 13-14 volts then there is a fault with the alternator.

Check the alternator belt, Last winter on my R34 I thought my alternator was dying as the volts kept dropping to 10v with the heated screen and lights on etc but it turned out the belt was nackered ad it was the extra strain causing more friction in the alternator making the belt slip.

Other than above it could be shorting out? My fuel gauge used to go down when I put my lights on lol.
