Hey Guys,

After looking on youtube, I couldn't really find what I was looking for.

So basically, I need to remove the Engine out of my 1996 EK4, Would I have to drop the engine out of the bottom, or is there a technical way of removing it out the top with a hoist.

Because I tried taking it out the top and it was just hitting on everything and wouldn't fit.

Thanks

It will come out the top, just make sure you have everything disconnected and a friend to help you with it.

Hi,

You need to either take engine & box out together or box first then engine, it comes out the bottom quite easily if they are together but then you have to lift the car over the engine ! So the easiest way is to lift the engine & box out the top.

Regards tony

Taking it out of the top is possible. Make sure the mounts are completely removed from the chassis. It is a bit of a squeeze and needs a second person to guide it up but it is possible. I found it easier to take it out the top. Can't really remember what else might foul the engine on the way up as it's been a while since I have done it, but if anything is obviously in the way just remove it. Hope this helps.

ive done it both ways, but as ive asked in your other thread....why are you removing engine for a clutch fault?

Hey fatboi,

Well I thought you had to remove the engine to get to the Clutch?

Also, it's easier to access the clutch removing the Engine rather than just removing the Box.

Correct me if I'm mistaken,

Hi mate,if i was you replacing the clutch i would just get the car as high as you can and remove the gearbox.saves you alot of hassle.however,if you do want to remove the engine i have always found it easier taking it out the bottom as you basicly just unbolt all your mouns, hoses plugs and gear linkage, put a pallet or wood or whatever under the sump and lift the car away from the engine using engine crane etc.but if your just replacing clutch just take gearbox out.saves alot of greif!

I would never dream of taking whole engine out to get to the clutch, personally I'd just take the gearbox off. Should be able to get to everything just fine.

remove the gearbox to change the clutch. ALOT less hassle than trying to remove the engine.

Last time i changed a engine on my 9 i just about wiggled it out, the aircon pump was causing me issues but when i done one without aircon it came out easily.

Wow, I didn't realise how hard I was making it haha, I'll give it a go when I get back from work,

Heres something you might find a bit funny;

Me and my bro were disconnecting everything and he goes "I won't really be able to get this engine out without discharging your AC, or we can try and move it round the pipes"
So after 20 minutes of contemplating I just was like

"yeah let's discharge the AC, I don't mind"

Then we tried releasing the pressure and nothing happened... we then jiggled it a bit and saw a loose pipe... My AC pipe was angle ground off by the previous owner...

Agreed. I guess it comes down to how much fun you want though lol.

We finally got the Clutch out guys, Thanks for the help.

Now I just need to find a decent priced one to replace it, haha!

Thanks!
