Hi, just looking for some advice on a clutch failure thats just happened.

My car has an exedy twin plate clutch, i had noticed that recently theres been a strange tapping noise which has been coming from the gearbox, when this noise appears if you depress the clutch slightly the noise will disapear.

Basically i went out for a drive earlier and came home to wash the car, went in after and had my t.

I came back out to take the car for a little evening drive, started the car and depressed the clutch, the clutch made a really loud screeching sound which didnt sound good at all, i put the car in reverse just to see if it would go in but it just made the noise louder, i tried every gear but it will not go in.

If u start the car in gear it will move at a snails pace and basically shake the car, i no this isnt a good thing to do so i only tried it once.

Im going to take the box off tomorrow to see what has gone wrong, does any one have any ideas as to what it might be as i have no experience with the twin plate design clutch.

Any ideas greatly appreciated

Just to update, ive taken the clutch out and found this.

as you can see the splines on both clutch plates have completley worn away, is this really the sort of thing that should happen to a £1300 clutch?

The splines on the input shaft look to be ok, i just dont understand how the splines could have stripped like that when i never really use high boost or launch the car.

Ive spoken with exedy uk who have said that theres a 3 month waiting list on these parts and couldnt give me a price, im kind of stuck here as im left with a clutch with loads of life left in the plate material a nearly perfect clutch cover and a flywheel thats only compatible with a twin plate clutch :/

What do you guys suggest i could do?

thanks

You used a lot of grease on the splines? Looks to have had a fair amount of grease on...

I did think there was alot of grease on the input shaft. I bought the car with the clutch already fitted though..

My competition clutch came with instructions that specifically said "do not over grease input shaft" and showed pictures just like yours.

Oh dear :( looks like i dont have a leg to stand on with regards to a complaint.

I have to admit there is grease every were inside the bell housing, never seen anything like it.

Thanks

Yeah looks like someone's over greased the shaft. You can give it ago with a complaint but wouldn't expect much to come of it tbh.
Says on my clutch paperwork they'll inspect it and of it's been over greased then tough **** basically lol

I thought that might be the case lol, its strange that grease can do that though as i would have thought that the splines would be pretty well locked together with the input shaft splines.

Im probably going to change the flywheel and clutch for a clutch masters fx400, do you no if there any good?
