Exhaust Noise Trouble with the Police?

Alright lads,

Im wondering if there is a legal limit for exhaust noise on a car?
The exhaust on mine is custom and after measuring it (just with an iphone app so not very accurate) it came out at
98dB on idle and well over 120dB when revving to 4500 rpm, (the mic wouldn't register anything above this as it was too loud.)

I'm going to be getting a new system in the next few weeks but in the mean time i'm wondering if the police could stop me and give me points or anything for the exhaust being too loud?

it is pretty much deafening when on the motorway lol...
 
120 is way to loud , it has to be under 100 ? i think

The legal limit across the UK is 101dba measured at between 2/3 and 3/4 maximum revs under load apparently as per the sva.
1.An exhaust may not be modified to make it noisier than standard.
2.Cars may not have an exhaust thats noisier than standard.

I see, thanks for the info.
A similar test on my peugeot showed 68 dB then 80 odd at high revs.
Will need to look into a new exhaust asap but really don't want to go to standard, but i guess that will be the only one under 100 dB.


surely some mustang or dodge viper or even a Harley motorbike will be above 100dB though?

Because they are standard that way or close at least , while searching i came across someone saying they give -/+ 10bd lean-way
 
I think if the Police did stop you they would give you a fine rather than points and tell you to silence or remove this exhaust. 120+ db though, thats really loud!

Hopefully, yeah it is really loud. Theres a sub in the back and the speakers have been upgraded aswell and even with the volume up full you wouldn't be able to tell that there was a song playing most of the time.

just typed in decibel meter into the app store and it was one of the first ones, let me know what you get/what exhaust you are running as i need an idea on what exhaust to get :D
 
Wow...what system do you have on your car? Do your ears not bleed
 
Well.. I've been running about since Friday with the B-pipe and backbox totally disconnected, it's deafening and I've not been pulled yet so christ knows. Haha. Touch wood.
 
i got pulled 2 nights ago by trafs on the new part of the m74, fined me for my hids n were going to fine me for my exhaust ( no idea how loud it is i just choped and welded :D ), later taht night they came by me and just decided to do me for a red light so there cracking down on all of this the now :(, only dont seem to bother that much in the town :/

That sounds like complete bollocks. Decibels are not linear, 20dbs is a massive difference.
