I have just completed my engine swap this weekend. I replaced my original engine 96" Ek4 (b16a2) with another rebuilt b16a2 inc, dc2 cams/valvetrain/inlet manifold...with breathing mods...

Used the same loom obviously as it was a straight swap. Started the engine and from the start it runs great.

- The only two issue I am having is the speedo is intermittent but I think that is to do with the connection on VSS maybe?

- The main problem is the engine management light is coming on and off, largely around the same pint my speedo is playing up (I think), Could the VSS cause this come on?

- The only other thing I could think of was the DC2 inlet mani I put on obvs doesn't have the bracket for the evap purge solenoid on the b16a2 mani. So far I just pugged the loom and cannister hose into it, basically running it how it was before, only difference is its just hanging there.

- The b18 mani does come with a sensor located just below the throttle cable bracket on the 3rd runner, which does fit the evap purge plug. Does anyone know if I could use this , or if any of the above could sort my engine management light problem.?

(**also have noticed the idle is a little high, around 1100rpm**)

Sorry for the lenghtly, questions. Any advice much appreciated.

Ali.

Does anyone know if you can use the method above whilst the engine is running.? On the way home from work about 10mins in. The light came on and the speedo started playing up at the same time. But as soon as I got home and turned the engine off. The light doesnt come back on when I turn on the ignition.

In other cars I've had if the light has been tripped then the code will stay stored on the ecu until its removed. Not sure of these ecu do that though,

Vss code can some times reset , u can get the eml to come on, pull over then test the codes with the engine running.

A faulty vss will cause no vtec, mental speedo and eml. Usually the center pin rots away on the plug

That sensor on runner of intake manifold is the IAT sensor, b16b and b18c had it there instead of in intake pipe like b16a's. Do not plug in your purge solenoid plug into it.

Thanks guys. Im certain the vss is the root of my problems. I unplugged it when I got home today and had a fiddle. Will have to see how it goes.

Vtec6000 - gotcha, its ok. I havnt plugged it in there and will deffinately not!

I take it your talking about the sensor on the IM danny?

I got the code today. As the light was on and the engine was running. I cant be sure if we had a long flash first or not. But there seemed 7 clear flashes. Suggesting either the vss (17) or throttle position (7).

Will have more of a fiddle tomorrow. Although speedohas been ok today. Just tue light comes on. :/

Also whenever I put the clutch down on idle. The revs want to dip down to about 500 for a second. Any more ideas?

Just to update the thread with what happend in case anyone ever searches with the same problem....

The problem was the Vehicle speed sensor (vss) in the end. I got the hang of the fault code method with a paperclip in the end and it came up with code 17.

I simply refitted the vss and straightened out the wiring, since June it hasn't skipped a beat.
