Hello all.

I'm having a problem with first gear on my '99 EK9. When driving slow in traffic
(about 15-20mph in second gear) and the traffic starts to move slower I need to move into first gear to get the car respond quicker but I can't get it into
first gear without bringing the car to a complete stop. Is this normal?
Also getting reverse when the gearbox is cold is difficult and I need to double clutch to get the car into reverse.

Any advise appreciated.

Thanks.

sounds like a clutch/thrust bearing issue, when you press your clutch in then let it out do you get a weird noise? hard to explain like a rattle or grinding noise? and when your clutch is pressed in it almost goes away totally?
i defo think its your thrust bearing and clutch as ive had a similar problem in my old ek4 vti

i doubt 99% its your box or engine but still your better getting it sorted asap or you will soon not be able to get any gears like i had happen in my integra type R :(

the reverse thing is a typical honda issue lol dont worry about it, but the thrust bearing issue etc wont help it and may make it worse

Not sure about the grinding noise on the clutch, will check later but I don't think
there is anything like that. Someone suggested it may be the linkage in the gearbox????

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO, :nerv: don't do it in this way, you will damage your gearbox sooner or later....... there is no need to shift in the first gear while you travel with 15-20 mph in a straight road!!! The reason for which you cannot put the first gear with this speed is because you do the wrong thing!!!
The first gear is used ONLY: for launch and when you climp an uphill and you feel that you loose speed, in order not to stall your engine.
Even in the case where you need to travel through a downhill and you want to slow down(continuous braking) without using your brakes to avoid disk overheating, you NEVER shift the first gear while moving.
Neo is correct, if you try to shift the reverse gear with a quick move, most probably you will have to try twice, but if you do it slowly, it will shift from first. BTW, I love the noise the gearbox makes when I shift the reverse, its LOVELY!!

I should specify and say that when I try to put into first gear the car is just creaping along (2-3mph), it's not going 15mph!!!! I know doing it at 15mph would wreck the engine. Sorry for the confusion, should have been more clear.

Oh, ok then, so you cannot shift in 1st gear while going around 5 km/h??
This is not again something to worry about because the first gear is always the most difficult to shift in and sometimes it might be hard to do it even with 2-3 mph. I have asked my mechanic the other day for this and he told me that is always bad for the gearbox to shift the first gear in while the car is moving and only if you feel your engine is going to stall with 2nd gear, then you should put the 1st gear in, otherwise, if your 2nd gear can hold the speed you never shift in the 1st.
In general, he said, if you cannot shift in the 1st gear, then it means it doesn't need to be used and you should not give pressure to the gearbox
Last, if you can shift it easily while launch, then there is nothing wrong with your gearbox :nice:

my opinion it could be possibly ure gearbox oil.if i were you change your gearbox oil.i use chrysler 75-140 oil with a friction additive.now when am approaching a roundabout at about 25 mph i can put it into first gear very easily.:D ,just try it before you have to take your box out. hope you get it sorted

manos is correct, i only go from 2nd to 1st if the car starts sputtering, what your describing is normal, the reverse is normal too, when going into reverse it helps to put it into 1st gear first then into reverse. aside from that you try using some pennzoil synchromesh trans fluid, it made my trans shift smooth as silk :nice:

Thanks for all the replies.

@ManosEK9: That is exactly the problem the car feels like it
is going to stall in second gear, so I need to shift to first.

use the pennzoil synchromesh, it helps. trust me on this one. though i wonder if this may be related to your throughout bearing.
