Gear selection problem

Hi Guys

Could anyone help me diagnose the following problem. :angry2:

When I'm parked and try to select 1st there seems to be loads of resistance from the gearbox and the only way to overcome this is to put it in 2nd and then go to 1st. When I'm moving there is also resistance going up the gears at high revs. I thought at first it might be the synchro but it happens when Im stationary. When you try to get it into 2nd it makes this weird chugging sound and sometimes cathces the gear and the car judders forward. Its definitely a mechanical noise.

I'm assuming that the clutch has gone - Andy from VTEC direct said that he had a similar problem with his Accord/DC5 and a friend had it on his Civic which a new clutch fixed.

Once in gear its absolutely fine with no noises at all

The only other thing I could think of is that the engine was rebuilt recently and that the engine/box hasn't been put back in properly and the alignment isn't right - but this only started happening about 400 miles after the rebuild and once in gear its fine.

Any comments appreciated.

if engine was out it should have had a new clutch fitted.it does sound clutch related, check mater cylinder isnt leaking and is adjusted correctly, check slave isnt leaking, make sure selector rod isnt bent/fouled by exhaust etc after that it may be the clutch itself.

The master cylinder was replaced recently so that shouldn't be the problem, its a different feeling to when that went previously. Is there a chance that the changed master cylinder could have affected the slave? Would badly adjusted slave/master cause a situation where the car shudders forward or makes a strange mechanical noise when I try to put it in gear?

Definitely not the selector rod, so we can rule that out.

Thanks for your help

Simon

Yeah thats what I think its going to be. Would you suggest getting a completely new clutch or just the pressure plate?

2 garages and a bit of logic later and someone managed to sort it out! As expected it was just the clutch, retainer clip'd as usual. Thanks Tegiwa and Andy at VTEC Direct for parts/advice, can't think how many times I had to explain that it couldn't be the bloody diff if I wasn't moving anywahere and the car was shuddering forward!!

For future reference if anyone knows a garage in bristol that knows 9s your comments would be appreciated - the garage that did it were ok but I'd like someone that's actually worked on one before.

Working like a dream now, that's engine rebuilt, clutch done hopefully that's it for a while!

Can't wait to get it on the taunton to lynton road!:))
