Dear EK9 owners,

I'd like to decrease my heavy car's weight (1165kgs). First I'd like to know what Honda did with EK9 to save around 30kgs, anybody knows?

I'm waiting for your ideas.

i dont know what that says, but you can start by removing the tar on the floor boards, remove the ac and ps. remove the rear interior and all brackets in the rear, remove rear tools and spare, buy a carbon hood, lighter wheels. remove windshield washer fluid. lighter flywheel. there are lots of ways.

Thank you for your answer. I'd like to keep AC an PS because it's a daily driven car. Tar on the boards you mean sound isolation?
My car is 1165 kg with full tank! How heavy is an EK9?

Hello,

My car when i imported it, the shipping quote stated that my car weight was 2450 pounds = 1111 kg. This with spare tire + tools.

I removed a/c, got a carbon fiber hood, removed the 4 speakers + radio, and added a carbon fiber radio block off plate. Also, i removed my exaust system, with mugen muffler, i shave off 65 pounds there! I installed a 7 pounds comptech race exaust. (too loud for daily drive)

i really dont know how much weight i lost there. But i think i might be in the 1080 kg range or maybe less!

I would recomend, since this is your daily drive, you can remove the rear carpets, spare tire + tools (when going to the track). Carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber trunk. With this you can take out like 30 - 40 pounds of weight. :nice:

If you live in a hot climate, keep your ac, but theres only benefits to removing your power steering, such as reduced weight, better road feel, and less parasitic loss of the crankshaft. People commonly remove 10 pounds or so of sound insulation tar on the floor using dry ice, a hammer, and a chisel. I dont know how much louder the car will be inside though.
For the ek civic there is a manufacturer making a lightweight replacement part for almost every part, from lightweight radiator stays to carbon fiber doors. Its up to you to decide which parts save the most weight for with the best price, and with the least negative repercussions. A carbon fiber hood is expensive and saves you about 16 pounds on average. You can get plastic windows from flex a lite or plastics 4 performance, they save alot of weight for their price compared to carbon fiber parts, but they scratch easily in most cases. An odyssey battery costs about $100 and, in my case, saved 19.5 pounds over the stock battery. Lightweight seats save a lot of weight, but with seats you get what you pay for. A light, carbon backed seat that is also reclinable is very expensive, while a seat from f1 spec is light, but doesnt have much padding and is non reclinable. There is a consequence for almost any part you add/take away, but also a benefit. Remember when trying to save weight the best weight to save is unsprung weight, which means the suspension and especially the wheels, tires, and brakes. The second best weight to save is up high, in the windows and roof panel. There are many other ways to reduce weight, but some of them, like removing radio and speakers, arent desirable to some people who want a steetable car.

i have to agree with the with the unsprung weight! thats very important, in an ek9 the wheels are already light weight, they're enkei wheels, but if you put volks te37 or desmond regamaster evo, wheels, it'll be definitly better!

This car comes perfectly balanced from the factory, you can't just remove everything, hehe, for example in my opinion if y change the heavy 40 pounds recaro seats for an aftermarket seat, i will buy them both! so i don't affect that much the balance. :nice:

I even race my car (not drag racing though...) with spare tire lol

btw, the ek9 doesn't have the sound isolation tar! :)

Do you mean race, or do track days? Hope you werent trying to win a race with that tire still in the back!
I know the ek9 has no tar, but usdm civics and ek4's have the tar. When your highway cruising is it very loud with no sound deadening tar? Not to jack the thread, but I would like to know if the ek9 is overly loud because I will soon have the chance to remove the tar as i'm replacing my carpet.

yep i did 2 track days with the spare tire on, lol.

nah, not that much, you can use it as a daily drive, without any problems, i have a comptech race exaust, so with or without it the car is very loud :angry2:

Can you give me the part number for the odyssey battery?
Are sure with saving 19.5 pounds, it's a lot!
The lightweight seats are good idea, since I don't have recaros I can buy something lighter. Only reclinable!

Thanx for the answer. Was the 1111 kg with full tank or ...?

In japan the car had half the tank when i bought it, it came with the needle on reserve, i really don't know when my car was weighted, but i'm 90% sure its 1111kg with the tank on reserve.

The part # for the battery I have is the PC545-MJT. 545 is for how many cranking amps it has for the first 5 seconds, MJ is for metal jacket, which is a thin metal heat sheild that goes around it so it can be under the hood legally in some places, and T is for terminal, which is the screw in metal terminals so you can hook it up to the stock wiring. This is a 12.6 lb. drycell battery, and there are different sizes, most honda people use the PC680 (680 cranking amps, 2.8 lbs heavier, slighty more reserve capacity) but I went with the 545 because it saves just that much more weight and is still sufficient for running my car. Also, weight isnt the only benefit of a drycell battery here is a link

i sell those batteries if anyone is interested. depending on your location it may be around $200 shipped. we use them on a lot of our evolutions to not only reduce weight but allow a more direct route for intercooler pipes.

I think the best thing to do is get a carbon bonnet, replace the heavy OEM CTR wheels with some lightweight forged wheels. For some reason these wheels are heaps heavier than the ITR 15'' wheels.
Removing the sound deading only removes about 6-7kg (13-15 pounds) Its a lot of work for not much but it is free. Getting light weight calipers would be another thing to do but it is generally going to be costly

I will have ITR wheels, nobody has CTR wheels in Hungary(not avaliable). I didn't know that CTR wheels are heavier.

hell yes :) Ive been looking for a suppler of a PC680 with the terminals as not many places want to ship to the uk :( Could you price one up for m,e please?

As for the EK9 rims they are 7.4kg's each (without a tire) i had a set and weighed one. But i now run on Dc2 15's but i dunno how much they weigh without a tire.
