EK9 Type R
Hello Guys, I have been in a situation, I recently bought an ek9 which I should get mid October, I used to have a 07 Si which I had Hondata Flashpro to tune the ecu, my question is will I use the same flashpro to tune the ek9? B series is a completely new platform to me and I been doing research about it but I feel like it is very complicated, looks like you have to get s300 and then another ecu, and get an obd2 to obd1, so now I don't understand anything, could somebody explain that to me?

stock ecu its not easy to tune it, or you get a ready made ecu like spoon or mugen (which will not be for the specs of your car),tune your ecu with a parallel like e-manage ,get a new tuner ecu for your harness like aem (which i believe its discontinued product but you can find them easy used) and last the option you mension ,as said our ecu is very dificult to tune ,on the other hand the previous generation of ecu was very easy ,so there come hondata they made that plugin for the old ecu ,which transfor it to a nice tunable ecu another option is CROME https://tunewithcrome.com/ which is free but require manual job to do to the stock ecu

thanks for the reply, I’m still a little bit confused, so if I use Crome I can use my stock ecu?
But the best option is to run obd1 ecu? If this is the case how’s the process? That’s what I don’t understand

crome is free ,BUT you must have knowledge to solder stuff on the stock ecu and then find a tuner able to use that kind of software.
the process is you buy an adaptor obd2(a or b,depends your model) to obd1 ,then buy an obd1 ecu hondata mod it and tune it.
the most important in cars ecu is not ,is the tuner who will tune it,you have to discuss it with him and find the best solution that HE CAN tune.
even if you choose a ecu from the moon ,doest matter if your tuner cannot touch it.

Oh I understand now, so basically get the adapter and the ecu
I’ll contact the tuner first in that case, do you know how much hp can you get from the b16b just from bolt ons and the tune?
And also thanks brother, this really helped me

If your car is OBD2, you need an adapter harness for your existing wiring to connect to an OBD1 ECU. The Hondata S300 is OBD1 only, I'm sure you're aware of already.

The other option is buying a Link G4X that drops into your OBD2 ECU housing. No adapter harness needed. The bonus is you're not running a chip off a 25 year old circuit board, and its way more tuneable compared to the Hondata. All that comes at a price though... Its expensive.

Depends on what you want though. The Link is pretty much overkill for a street car that has mild modifications. To put it into perspective, no one I know runs a Link. Its either stock, Hondata or Moates Demon (Neptune). Both those aftermarket options require chipping an OBD1 ECU.

Yeah I’m not looking for anything crazy with the car, just small modifications and get the ecu tuned of course, maybe a turbo kit in the future but looks difficult since looks like there are no many plug and play kits out there or I least from what I have seen
So just to make sure, I have to get the obd2 harness to connect to the obd1 ecu which what I’ve been looking at seems like the p28 is the way to go and put the s300 on it and then get it tuned? That would be it right?

I’ve got a Link G4X on my DC2. Think it was about £900 brand new during last Black Friday. Maybe a little less.
How much is a P28, S300 and adaptor harness going to set you back?
A new S300 is £500. Used P28 seem to go for £200 looking on eBay.

No brainer for me. The new standalone.

That’s what I’m trying to figure it out, like I said I’m not familiar with these B series engines, I used to have a 07 Si with flashpro and was very simple but with these there is little information at least here in the US

Ah didn’t know you were in U.S sorry.
I was like you looking at ways to remap my car for mods.
There really wasn’t much difference price wise between “old school and new school”. Standalone versus a piggyback board on an old ecu. Plus as I said I was looking around Black Friday time and got a great deal.
The Link came with a base map so I could get it to the tuner.

Yes price wise is about the same but my concern is how to tune it the easiest less headache way I guess I will just look for a tuner around here and get advice from him

"how to tune it the easiest"
Thats not up to you. Choose a tuner that you're confident in and ask them what they're comfortable working with. Some guys will only do Hondata since thats what they specialise in, and theres other that'll tune on Link, Haltech, A'PEXi, etc.

Since you're in the US, you should be able to grab a Link for less than what it costs here in Europe. Plus theres always YouTubers offering discounts, like Jimmy Oakes for example. You don't need to buy a Hondata brand new. Its been around for years, so you'll be able to find one secondhand, already installed on an OBD1 ECU.

From what i gather, your old flashpro won't work directly. You'll need either an obd1 ecu with s300 or maybe look into that Link G4X thing. Bit of a learning curve but worth it for the ek9. What mods are you planning anyway?
