I think my clutch slave cylinder needs replacing but want a second opinion.

OK so I went to Surrey Rolling road and had Charlie do a few power runs as I just wanted to get an idea of how consistent my engine is, the air/fuel mix and the power curve etc.

As soon as I pulled away, I noticed it was quite hard to get my car into any gear. It got a bit better after ten minutes or so of driving and now I think my slave cylinder is failing. Here are all of my symptoms:

- Although I can't see any leaks, my clutch fluid level has dropped maybe a couple of mm but this could just be normal differences when checking from day to day?

- No crunches or anything from the gearbox, it's just difficult to change gear and sometimes difficult to take out of gear also. This is at any speed and any gear.

- Occasionally when coasting in first gear, the car engages the gear, even with my foot flat down on the clutch.

- If I hold the clutch in for a few more seconds than normal, it is much easier to get into gear - the cylinder taking time to work as it is starting to fail?

Is it possible the dyno runs I did finally caused the slave cylinder to start showing these signs of wear? Could my clutch have been damaged in any way? I can't imagine a few dyno runs would stress the car any more than just VTEC'ing it down the road a few times. So far, the car is perfectly driveable but I have to be really deliberate with how I change gear, hold the clutch down longer and just try not to be too rough with it. As I said, there are no crunches or anything. Do I have an issue elsewhere? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Well it's either goina be clutch cylinder or clutch itself. Best bet would be to take the clutch cylinder off and inspect it

Is a bit of a strange one. I would have a look under the dash and check the master cylinder but the issues your having doesn't really sound like it could be a problem with the cylinders.

Even when my slave cylinder popped it's seals the car still drove fine but I only had half the travel in the pedal.

I would still check for leaks, maybe re bleed it and check the fork is still moving nicely under the rubber boot. After that it could be a clutch or gearbox issue.

He said his clutch fluid went down a little day after day. It's not supposed to go down noticeably like that at all. I don't think it's the clutch itself. I really think it's either the clutch slave cylinder or the clutch master cylinder. Both of them are not expensive at all.

It could be the slave cylinder. before the slave started leaking on my car i found it hard to get into gear sometimes and found holding in the clutch longer or pumping it would make gear changing easier.

there was no visible signs of leaking at first but now its clearly leaking. i have to keep topping up the clutch fluid and bleed it as best as i can. the biting point is right down near the floor. tegiwa are charging me 80 pounds for a new one.

dont leave it like i did and end up being stuck in the carpark till a mate rescued me :))

I have just had the clutch fluid bled and replaced - the slave cylinder looks fine with no leaking and it does feel better but the issue really starts on longer journeys so I'll know next week.

Well I have a slave cylinder on order (checked my master cylinder, can't see any signs of leaking there) but this morning as I got into work, I went to park and got massive clutch drag in first, almost stalling before I got it into neutral. It then wouldn't go into gear at all for a few minutes. Eventually it did. I'm hoping it will get me home so I can borrow a car and fit the slave cylinder on Wednesday.... if it even is that :(

This sucks

Replaced slave cylinder and bled the system thoroughly a number of times through and the issue is still there
Now I'm thinking master cylinder - can anyone else offer any advice? I need to decide where to go with this now... I'd hate to do a whole new clutch only to find I still have the problem only with a brand new clutch. The bite is still good and if it was clutch, why would it get worse on a longer journey and then be better once it cools down?

The seals inside the master cylinder might have failed hence letting pressure off. when it doesn't go into gear, will it go in if you pump it quickly several times?
Dunx

It was the clutch - the release bearing was literally in bits and there was bits of metal from the casing. It's perfect now!
