A friend of mine wants to import his own car, not an Ek9 (sorry!!), from Japan.

I told him it might be easier just to get someone to do it for him but he is determined to do it himself. So he asked me to post and find out the costs:

Shipping Cost?
Tax/Duty Cost? when the car arrives at port in Uk
SVA Cost? (is this the mot?) Or do you need to get MOT aswell

What other costs are involved? And How Much?

I know car of certain age are exempt from SVA tests

cars over 10 years old are exempt.

check out autoadvan..their fees arent that high compared to alot of dealers as they act more like middle men

shipping i think from japan to uk is about £500.
tax and duty...if i remember right all in its about 22% on what the shipping cost and vehicle cost are.
sva for an ek9 i think in total is about £400 not including the work needed i believe. im not sure if you still need an mot then.

You will need to get an SVA if the car is under ten years old. You will also need to get an MOT after the SVA has been done.

Another option for your mate is to use a company like autoadvan to do some of the legwork for you.

HTH

buy on ethats already here much easier i woudl of thought,, and when everything adds up doubt you would dsave much doing it yourself

I dont think people would do it for a living then olly if there wasnt much to be made.

He wants to do it on his own, pretty insistent on doing it.

Just doesnt know where to start!

Like. how does he get in touch with a dealership in Japan?

personally if he hasnt got a clue there are many many places that things could go wrong so id steer clear.
if you go through someone like autoadvan they will give you access to auctions 2 or 3 days in advance and do all the leg work for you.
if you do it on your own you will struggle to find dealerships out there with GOOD english. and more often than now you will pay more for the car than you would at auction.
if hes insistant then so be it. but just remember the old "i told you so".lol.

shipping cost to the Uk should be around 800 $ to 1000 $

I will give you a suggestion, try to confirm twice or more, your consignee details, japanese people tend to make mistakes when writing your name or address in the bill of lading, this happened to me last year :nerv: and its a pain in the ass to fix this...

Here are all the uk relevant info on importing...

IMPORTING A VEHICLE

Heres an excellant agent in Japan: Tell him the Guy with the turbo EK9 sent you! The english is a little broken but he speak well enough, (just speak clearly)

Email:
nori@jtm-corp.com
call him on 00819072890011
or the main office on 0081454507100

If you call him on a thursdays he'll be at one of the auction houses so youll have to call him on his mobile! email him what your after, ask him for milage/price-range.

As for conversion/esva, Ive used sampson SVA
Adam Sampson - 01795582870, once before and also more recently on my EK9, the service is very good and cheaper than the Liverpool technical centre!

From JTMs site you can look at all the available auction vehicles, then you would ask nori or even the boss (Tom-Jimbo) to give you more details on the car, then you can ask him to go to the aucton, examine the vehicle in person before it goes to auction, then he will send you relevant pictures and details, and advise you on general price idea of what itll sell for.

If you want to call for cheap then you need to get a good international callign package on your phone, but that is the best way to do it. otherwise go to voipcheap.com and sign-up, then you can have a mobil to mobile/mobile to land-line call for next to nothing! Nice easy way to communicate mobile.

Hope that helps!

Keep in mind that if theres any bad weather at sea it could add weeks to the waiting time, bad weather can fall at sea in minutes and delay your car for weeks!

thanks for everyones help, he got intouch with a few dealers (not auctions) in Japan, and has had 3 replies already!!! Not to bad.

he is enquiring about a few cars, so started off fairly well.

The bit we are stuck at is when the car is over here, what happens.

He is aiming for a car over ten years old to avoid SVA.

When car has landed here, what happens, how do we clear tax and duty then and there?

Then we have MOT booked so we can drive it home then.

Car goes for MOT, then we need to apply to Register car and we are done yes? After taxing it ofcourse?
