I have been researching this for quite a while as I've lived overseas for a little over 4 years. I see this question pop up every now and then and thought I would compile a couple links of important information. This is the legal way and means you have to go through to import. Some people may have a CTR in the states, but I assure you 99.9% it's there illegally. When you ask these people how they did it, the reply is generally the same ('I know someone') and they never tell you how they did it. It's because they know they can loose their car and cause a company to go out of business by paying hefty fines.

Pay attention to the NHTSA link. This sets the precedent for all vehicle importation:
Vehicle Importation and Certification Requirements

This link is from a RI (Registered Importer) who lays out just how much it can cost and even more requirements:

Of course the EPA has to be involved:
Importing Vehicles and Engines into the U.S. | Transportation & Air Quality | US EPA

I hope this helps people to understand what it takes to import a EK9 to the states.

If anyone on this forum has imported a EK9 to the states I would be interested in seeing the cost and bureaucratic layout of how they did it. Of course, those with the 'I know someone' answers need not reply. Hopefully someone messages the NHTSA and lets them know about you. Your illegal activities have influenced our government to make it difficult to bring vehicles into the states. Sorry for jumping on a stand there.

I'm stationed here in Japan, and i own an ek9. i can't import it the easy way because she does not meet the 25 year old requirement. I'm trying my best not to sell it or break it apart and rebuild it on an ek chassis when i get back to the US. All the references on those websites tell me that is not possible to import it because of its nonconformity. I really hope i can figure out method to legally import her as a whole.

If anyone has any other infos, please share it with us.

If you have a prefacelift model and the possibility to register it in canada. Do that and drive it to the us with canadian plates on it. As far as I know Canada has a 15 years import law. Somebody in this forum lives in canada and did that.
best regards and good luck
Oliver
