I think the pointed down tail pipe may help lower the sound it gives off. Sound would reflect from the road and up, opposed to horizontal in your face position.

You are very much correct sir. It has an unbelievable effect on noise. Anybody ever wonder why diesels usually have their tips down? Well mostly for the smoking under WOT but sound plays a part in that too. I think.
