The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is inspired by the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR of 1955 which was actually based on the W196 F1 car, yet named after the road-going Mercedes 300SL Gullwing.

Engine

The SLR has a supercharged 5.5 (5439 cc) litre dry sumped 90 degree stacked six V8. It produces 466.8 kW at 6500 rpm (626 hp) and 780 N·m (575 ft·lbf) torque at 3250 - 5000 rpm. AMG Engineers took the original SL-55 AMG engine and optimized its capacities by enlarging the fuel pump, the cylinders, and installed a larger cooling system. It has 3 valves per cylinder with SOHC. This is very unusual as most supercars, indeed most modern cars, have DOHC and 4 valves per cylinder, but it keeps with the recent trend in modular V engines from Mercedes Benz and decreases engine emissions. The Twin-screw type supercharger and the 2 aluminium rotors have a maximum speed of 23,000 rpm. It is mounted between the two engine banks and uses 120 bhp at maximum capacity.

Unlike most of its contemporaries, its engine is front-mid mounted. McLaren took the original concept car designed by Mercedes and moved the engine 1 metre behind the front bumper, and around 50 cm behind the front axle. They also optimised the design of the centre firewall.

Damn youre lucky. I want to drive one! Haha.

since i work at a performance shop ive driven a lot of really fast 500+whp cars so i was not super amazed, but it was blindingly fast. its very different than most mercedes, usually mercedes have a low redline and make a lot of low end tq, this thing was more like a honda, it revved high and just kept building power!! it was great :)

SLR McLaren is the only Benz-Mercedes car made of carbon fiber completely(exterior, gear box etc....) so thats why is the best ever made and you felt so impressed driving it!!
Here in my country, we are less than a million population, salaries are not too high, we have one Lamborghini Murcielago and a McLaren SLR which was sold last weekend  Only 1500 SLRs were made in total and it was bit weird to see it on TV :wow:
Also the max speed allowed here is 100 km/h on highway road, a lot of nasty roads as well, its not the right place to own such a car, its the most unlucky SLR!!!
Be carefull however, in case you have the chance one day to drive the McLaren F1 LM(orange)

whats the rev limit? :wow:

honestly im really afraid of fishtailing so i always get scared and short shift in those kind of cars, i think i was shifting at 6000 but the engine could have gone to ~7000 rpm maybe a little higher.
