Hi,

Im in the process of building up a gearbox for a race car.
Spec is
Mfactory 1.5 way plated lsd
Synchrotech carbon lined synchros
Std oem honda gears & final drive

Is it best to run the torco MTF or the RTF and do I need to add any friction modifier?

Car is purley are race car only that will be doing 45 minute races & Im not fussed about a clunking diff.

Been reading through here and the net but cant find a difiniative answer.

anyone help??

Mfactory would be the people to ask mate, but they'll sell you ther own brand oil,
I've heard the motul gear ls 75w 90 is good for our boxes with plate lsd,
If your not worried about noise then I would t use any friction modifier, not great for the syncros or the diff really, mainly used to keep things quiet.

if its for a race car id get a 4.9 final drive aswell thats my setup and makes a massive difference,im goina try out the torco rtf and see how it is

Will you let us know what you think of it? In looking to try different oils but if you try this and its not great I know not to bother.

That's the oil got in ther now Fuchs 75w-90. If that's best stuff you've used then I'll stick with it

Ive asked Mfactory but not had a response yet & Torco is their recommended (for warranty purposes) oil but just need clarification on which option is best.
Tegiwa told me either was fine but the RTF puts up with the heat better.

I have read that Friction modifier is good for the plates in the diff but has a negative effect on the synchros by making them to slippery causing crunching which i dont want.

Box is a 98 spec ITR DC2 with 96 spec 4th & 5th which gives me a theorectical top speed of 131mph in top which is fine for most of my races but might be bouncing off the rev limiter at Spa.

Ive used fuchs and motul in Subaru's and Mk2 escort race cars both of which where very good but I know the honda box and diff is very oil sensitive.

No doubt they'll say use the torco stuff then, their priority is the life of the diff, but you've got the whole box to worry about. On the Fuchs stuff I'm on ATM cold gear change is allittle stiff but after a few minutes the shift is fine.
My understanding on the friction modifier is it allows the plates in the lsd to slip slightly and its this that reduces the noise they make?
I may be wrong I've only just installed my diff and still squatting up on it all.

I was also in a bit of a quandary as to what oil to use in my box, as i have a mfactory 4.9fd and a kaaz diff. Everyone says to make the diff most liveable use the kaaz oil (75w-90), but for the warrantee on mfactory products they say Torco.

I had the following response by Mfactory:

The "Transmission Fluid" that we recommend is Torco MTF or Torco RTF. We don't recommend using weighted gear-oil because, unlike the applications that Kaaz's general statement is aimed at (i.e RWD cars with differential housings), your differential is located inside your transmission which was designed to be run on 10w30 weight engine oil. If you use thick gear oil, it will clog up the oiling pores/holes and won't be able to lubricate your needle bearings. This is the #1 cause of transmission failure/rebuilds.

FYI, Kaaz Diff Oil is actually re-branded Torco RGO (Racing Gear Oil), made here in the States.

I am now planning to use the Torco RTF, bit with a touch of of Type F modifier to stop the chatter slightly as it allows the clutch's to slip slightly, as jesse888 says above which seems to make sense covering all areas.

I also found out others with clutch type diffs are using the following:

50/50 Kaaz and Honda MTF
Fuchs Titan Race SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil & RED LINE Limited-Slip Differential Friction Modifier

Kaaz oil for me, that's what I am going to use for racing this year £35 for 2 litres

Thanks chaps,

Will go with the rtf with no addative and report back how it performs.

Just need to source the 96 spec 4th & 5th as r motion & integrastella no longer have any. Any other suggestions to source them?

Your supposed to have the clunking mate. To do with the initial lock, if it doesn't knock it's not working !

i would say the clue is in the 'R', r for racing

i use the rtf and the modifier, very rarely crunches gears(kaaz diff)

once your foot is down the diff is locked all the time, pretty sure the kaaz oil has loads of friction modifier in it already

Just use the MTF/RTF and Type F modifier, it's not too expensive. And it complies with the warranty terms.

Ats state that our diffs do not make any noise,
Yet both of ours do.
