I own a '97 VTi with a B16A2 with +/- 200000km. I use the car for track days and in weekend. During trackdays I notice the oil gets hot fast, so I was planning on installing an oil cooler. But since I was going to do this work, I also need to put new oil in the engine. The car has always had 5W40 full synthetic oil.

I was reading on different forums about oil selection, and I found that it was maybe better using 5W50 or 10W60 full synthetic for track use, because it could cope better with the high temperatures.

Opinions please? It's a car that doesn't get used in winter.

If i where going to use eaither, id use 10w60 just for the fact its will be slightly thicker over the 5w50 when the engine is cold upon startup and cold mornings. Another thing you might want to consider if your "upgrading" your oil system for track use with a oil cooler and new oil is a sump baffle. just a thought as they arnt very expensive and gives u peice of mind (or me atleast) :)

thanks, the sump baffles were actually a no brainer, so I didn't include this in my question. I'm going to order the Tegiwa baffle plates in a couple of days.

No worrys just thought id mention it as some people overlook it :)

you'll lose a fair bit of power going that high on high temperature shear resistance. you'd be better off running an oil cooler and a lower shear rated oil than going up to a 60 rated oil

I understand that running thicker oil makes all the parts move a little heavier, but is it really that noticeble in HP loss?

Goosse do you still have the small oem ek4 radiator???
Otherwise it would be cheaper first to cool everything down with a bigger dc2 radiator ???

I already have the DC2 radiator, but the car still doesn't stay cool enough trough the track sessions.

i use 10w40 miller cfs race oil triple esther based and a higher burning temp brilliant oil didnt use a drop on last track day and i was out 5 or 6 times on that outting altho i am using a 13 row mocal oil cooler

it's not thicker it is just more resistant to being sheared away from a surface while under pressure which will lose you some power. your best bet is to get a decent thermostatic oil cooler setup and not run such expensive and potentially power sapping oil.
