police speed trap?????

Sorry but they are bastards.
Cameras, vans and police hide to try to catch people.
They pop out from round corners round here, I strongly believe its a money exercise.
No way is it a visual deterrent the way they place them right after blind corners etc it's a scam.

Jake123, its their job to catch speeders like you. What do you want? Do you want them to tell you where they are as you are getting in your car to go speeding on public roads? Are you dense?

P.S. I may be biased as my kid brothers a police officer :p

Here he is (holding my son)...

Hats off to your brother man!

Lol, I've nothing against the police or the laws of the road, but come on guys we all break the laws, and probably on a regular basis. I have no problems with taking the points and fine, I broke the law, I knew the risks, I got caught. but if there is a way of getting away with it, I will choose that option like every single one of you would. So please don't feed me this useless talk about paying the price... I simply asked a couple of questions to save a little bit of hasstle. No one here is a guru of the road.

thank you to the people that did give me some reasonable answers :nice:

i always ask the question.

WTF were doing to " see the van at the last minute " i and everyone i know see's them from miles away.. and they are not alowed to hide, mainly because the reason they are there is not to catch you its to make you aware they are there so you slow down.. they'd rather you see them and brake and slow down than go speeding through and they can fine you... despite popular belief..

how aware are you of the surroundings when you drive.. it worries me you travel at such high speeds and then can't see a camera van..

take more care when you are driving and start to become more aware of your surroundings..

slow down man.. i mean no offence by this dude.

at least you will look out for them in future huh ;)

I agree with you mate and its a fair point, the only reason I can give you is, I've been going past this bridge almost daily for the last 3 years and I've never seen one there before, so it was the last place i expected to get caught :/

Also, when i am driving quicker, im usually paying more attention to the cars around me than the ones that are on the bridge.

But i do understand your point and i take no offence to it :nice:

In Scotland, or around my area at least the police state in the local newspaper where they will have mobile speed cameras placed throughout the week, not good for the police casually standing beside the road but I agree with most people in this thread you have ample opportunities to slow down.

To the OP it's unfortunate that you have "likely" been caught but maybe it'll teach you that there is a place and time to go fast :)

In complete contrast to this, I personally think they should give points out to people driving too slowly. Following somebody this morning doing 25 in a 50 zone, a lorry even tried to overtake! If someone came round the corner even doing the speed limit in the opposite direction, it would have been very nasty.

speed cameras are bright yellow
and the speed gun vans used by police must have a sign before the van to warn you of their presence...i was told this by a police officer about 2 years ago. i think the sign reads something like... 'police mobile speed watch ahead' or something along those lines. and if i remember correctly he said it has to be a minimum of 200 yards before where they are parked. there is a police parking bay directly opposite my house... and whenever they park there they display a sign at both ends of my road!

The sign has to be at least 200 yards away? I was caught doing 56 in a 50 zone from 270 yards away. Wouldnt have had time to see the sign if that's the case lol

i was also caught doing 64 in a 40 and that was from over 200 yards away. im not sure what the exact distance is mate. just stating what i was told by an officer in my street

See thats a more interesting story! Whenever I say I was caught speeding most people are dissapointed to hear it was only 6mph over the limit lol

I guess police policies are bound to differ slightly depending on where you live :)

The van could of been one of those ANPR cameras to check insurance and tax etc. if you didn't see anyone stood there with a speed gun then it's possible it was just that.

Speeding laws are a real tough one. The law in the UK states that each week the police must publish information in at least one local paper giving details of which roads they will position mobile speed cameras so that the public can be made aware in advance. EU law also says that ALL types of speed camera must be clearly visible, so any Police officer trying to catch people speeding whilst hidden is doing so illegally and this can be challenged in court. In the UK this means that all fixed speed cameras must be painted yellow (our old grey ones were deemed illegal by EU law hence why they were repainted yellow) and mobile police camera vans must be in clear sight (not on top of bridges or in bushes or down side roads etc) and must be painted in brightly coloured police livery

As stated in this thread before, the cameras by law have to be primarily a deterrent, not a punishment. If you have driven in France for example, you will know that instead of having brightly coloured speed cameras, each one has a huge great sign x amount of distance ahead to tell you there is a speed camera coming up
