Hey guys and dolls, was asking around and taught this is the best place for a final answer, ek3 1998 hatch is 15 VTEC right?! There is no version of the car with 15l but non VTEC(apart from a ferio with engine d15b if I remember correctly) unless engine was swapped?

I forgot to add that the sedan came with a 1.5 L SOHC no vtec engine :)

Just to make it clear, VTEC-E is different from B-series VTEC, it is there for fuel economy not for power. The car wouldn't be any slower without it, just less fuel efficient.

Guess all d series engines are fuel efficient ?

Well, B series can be fuel efficient as well, however the D15 VTEC-E is particularly good. In low revs - off VTEC - it opens three valves fully and one partially, which reduces fuel consumption. When VTEC comes on it opens all 4 valves fully. There's no set VTEC crossover point like in B-series, but in this case it is load and rev dependent, and it always switches over at fairly low RPM. In EK3 there's a little green (iirc) light on the dash, when the light is on VTEC is off and the car is in "fuel efficient" mode.
