hi all, I know this topic has been covered before in previous threads but i wanted to get peoples up to date opinions.

Basically i serviced my car (EM! b16a2) a couple of weeks ago, and since then ive covered about 1500 miles. consisting mainly of a 100km motorway drive twice a week and city driving between then.

After checking my oil yesterday im already down half a litre!! I know vtec burns a lil oil but im just wondering is this an above average amount to burn in such a short period??

Was hoping people could give their own rates of oil use.

I know im going to be told i should do a compression or leakdown test, but just want peoples opinions on whether i should be that concerned before i do.

thanks

That amount is alrite IMO for an older engine , if it was twice that Id be getting concerned.

1500 miles to half a litre sounds pretty good to me mate, my b16a2 used to use more oil than petrol. I'd need a litre to every 150 - 200 miles.

honda updated the manual years ago saying 1 litre to 1000 miles is ok.

thou i think i would be ripping the engine apart if it was drinking the above.

There all the same! When you see people saying it doesnt burn a drop of oil its lies! They all do as stated by Honda! Once its not a major amount its fine! All you need to do is top it up id it is getting a bit low!

Its good tho to find out where the oil is passing , could be the PCV valve stuck open , simple fix.

If it was the rings I wouldnt worry until it got really bad but with the valves it can be a different story , you can run the risk of damaging the seat , retainer wear and worst case dropping a valve

Phew some of these comments have eased my worries ha, thanks!

Thats not true, my dc5r, ek9 and dc2r all used to burn oil but not anymore. It also comes down the the engine oil your using. Certain oils like Castrol Edge and many other oils I've tried just kept burning until i switched over to amsoil. My last 2 oil changes didnt burn a single drop.

my old vti used about 100 ml to 200ml between every oil change (circa 5000 miles) my ek9 uses no oild between services (circa 4k miles)

My B16B hardly burns oil at all but each engine is different and as said above there are a few factors that can contribute. It's time to worry when you can see it in the exhaust fumes!
