However! There will still be a big difference after you do the light wiring for top and bottom to stay on; I'm pretty sure you figured it out yourself too. In the DIY guide, did you notice how the two lit portion of the tail lights are very much more spaced out than the picture you posted in this thread of the setup you wanted to have? It's because there is a reflector strip inside the tail light. You might have to open up your tail light and remove that reflector strip area or cut it out so that the light from the top portion of the tail light shines in that empty space. Also, you leave the walls on that spacing alone and cut a hole behind that area and add another light bulb because that is how the tail lights in America are set up to light up that thin portion.
