Alright guys, I'm hearing this weird scraping/grinding noise coming from my civic coupe with a standard b16a2. It happens in first, second and third gear whenever I let off the power. It goes away once I apply some power or put the clutch down, haven't heard it yet in 4th or 5th. Just wondering exactly what it could be, any suggestions? cheers :)

sounds like your engine and gearbox is flexing when your engine breaking and coming in contact with something....how are your mounts like?

Check your power steering fluid isnt low? My old ek's fluid was low and it made a similar noise

Main bearing in your gearbox. Would put money on it. Bet it happens low down in the revs aswell. Does the "scraping" noise kinda sound like old brake pads rubbing?

how much do they cost? Mine makes this noise too, when you let off the throttle. But I had my flywheel and clutch replaced so I don't know if it was something to down with the lightened flywheel?

I checked the power steering fluid and it seems fine, mounts seem fine too. Ah right okay, ye I did a bit of research and I think it could be the bearing in the gearbox that's on it's way out but not 100% sure. My mate also suggested this, definitely felt gearbox related anyway. It happens when on low revs whenever there is no power being applied. Ye it sounds similar to pads rubbing or something like the splash shield being dragged along the floor. Horrible sound though :(

Definitely the bearing so. I couldn't really say how much it would cost over there in England. Personally i'm always looking for a reason to upgrade so id replace the whole box. Maby some straight cut gears. Haha.

Ah okay lol ye if can find a decent priced one i'll just replace the whole gearbox I guess. Would you say it's still okay to drive for the time being or best not to use the car unless need to? thanks for the reply

Ah drive the car by all means man. I just wouldn't put it on the long finger and forget about it yano.

Okay cool, ye will definitely not forget about it the noise will keep reminding me. I'll probably just use it for a bit longer till I find a replacement gearbox asap. Thanks for the help mate! :)
