Temperature gauge at MAX

Hi all

I just had a new water pump, timing belt and thermostat put in.

We flushed the coolant out, changed all the parts and topped it up again with new coolant (5.5 litres!!!) We let the engine run for about 20 mins until the fan kicked in with the rad cap off so that all the air was out. Was holding level nicely

Went for a drive, gentle for the first few miles. I then vtec'd it, I looked down and the temp gauge was all the way at the max! I pulled over, turned the car off. Nothing smoking. I put the heaters on full wack and drove home slowly, temp. gauge was steady in the middle as per normal.

Any ideas what's going on? Possibly still air in the system??

Thanks

Mike

check that the tstat is installed in the correct direction
make sure tstat working properly also

fan should turn on 2 trimes prior to putting cap back on as well as car on level ground.

Thanks mate...... thing is, the thermostat is a brand new OEM one so wouldn't have thought it was at fault?

its a directional part, it needs to be installed pointing in the correct direction.

Funny you should say this! I had exactly the same thing. I replaced the water sensor thermostat and fan switch, bled the system, was fine drove a long journey 2 hours there and back. Then the other night. It done it again, I thought I'd cured it, baffled me!
Air still in the system?
A correct ratio of coolant to water in the cooling system? I just don't know.. Like you say I then put the heating on and it sits where the heater should always sit on a Honda!

I'd say your problem is theres air still in the system! Best way to solve it start the car, open the release valve at the bottom of the rad, if there is a weak stream then theres air trapped somewhere! Just leave the bottom valve open and open the rad cap until the stream gets heavy then lock the release valve turn the car off and top the rad up and it should be fine!

Nice one, cheers mate. I will give that a go tomorrow. Think there must be air still in the system as I managed to put another 1/4 litre in the rad today + top up the expansion bottle!

Cheers

Just to update - Did as suggested, pulled bottom rad plug out - stream was dribbling out. released rad cap and after about 5 seconds the stream started to really low. Plugged bottom up and then let it self bleed as normal, waiting for the rad fan to kick in. Took it for a 10 mile drive with some vtec and temp gauge never moved above half way, so def. looks like it was just air stuck in the system still.

cheers

Mike
