Im looking at tuning a b series engine for my rally car. The only limitation is the capacity has to remain at less than 1600cc. At the moment i have a standard b16b motor fitted. When looking at tuning options on the bare engine im looking at rods, pistons, valves, valve springs, retainers etc etc. My point is, as every internal component is going to be changed is there any advantage to using a b16b as a base engine opposed to a more common b16a?

Stick with b16b and maybe get some aftermarket pistons which will increase compression and they should also be lighter than the b16b pistons then just go with some head work and itb's if budget allows.
