UK Registraion Plate Laws

Ok, so ......

Driving home Sunday night and the cops roll up behind me. They sit there for about a mile then then on the lights. I pull in get the usual questions and they tell me my plates are illegal because the spacing between the letters is wrong ("oh for **** sake how pathetic" i think to myself). Now I have to go and get them changed and get a HORTI signed by an MOT station to say they are legal and take it to the cops to approve. What a pain in the arse, but as it turns out, I got off easy - you can get up to a £60 fine and 3 points!!!

I want to get square plates on my 9 when i get them changed, kill two birds with one stone. But I don't know if these are legal either!!

Can anyone shed light on the situation? Thanks very much.
 
that happened to my mate and he got 3 points,

count yourself lucky and get them changed, you did have insurance on your car right,:)
 
Yeah dude, car is fully insured in my name :)

What did your m8 get done for? Spacing, lettering or square plates?
 
Square plates are totaly fine m8, as long as your car is a Jap Import than no problems.. I have never been bother with the police and my lettering is made with carbon fibre !!! haha :D

U can have custom reg plates in UK?!
In Russia they are issued by the cops when you register your car. If they are hand made, you will be fined (badly), the plates will be taken off, the car will be towed to a the police lot (which is not free). Then you will have to get temporary registration plates, pay the fine, and then get new registration plates.
A lot of money wasted and a great headache

I can get the horti signed for you if its gonna cost you or somethin daft like that.
 
spoke to you before man lol sourcing a 9 just now.

don`t have my own garage but worked in one for 4 years and good pals with the m.o.t tester, had to do the same thing with a set of plates i had a while back, tis a pain in the arse.
 
I have had a further wee quiz into this with the cops and get this. Haribo this will apply to you possibly afew others ........

The cops are saying : If you have a private registration number and you don't have on legal plates, they can actually revoke your plate and not refund your money. Destroy the plate and the license to own one ever again and re-issue the standard plates!! :nono: some people pay thousands of pounds for private plates, imagine they took them off you :mad:

WIIIT, thats a heavy joke !! I was gonna invest in my perfect one as well tis only 400 bucks, might just not bother now lol incase the spacing don`t look right to them and i get robbed of it :angry:

i`ll just get him to sign it then thats it, 2 min job, as long as the plates that are goin on it are sound he propb won`t even look to be honest lol

So have a plate "S114RKE"

Have a black dot in the middle of the "11" so it looks like an "H". If they catch you with that, they can take it off you for good. And it wasnt cheap.

Load of shite. Fancy solving a murder or 2 timewasting bas****s?

hahaha aye, the amount of motors that jump about wi no m.o.t, tax or insurance etc. and they start cryin at a reg ! there just jealous mate lol
 
Here in the good ole US of A we have our department of motor vehicles make our custom plates. We are only allowed 7 alphanumeric characters to. How do you brits get your plates done?
 
We can go to any garage and get any old stuff put on a plate. Problem is if it doesnt meet all the rules the cops eat you alive ie this thread lol

Cops just want you for everything in this country!!

Nah, i don't think is the DNA :D but the millions or billions of income every year goverments make from fines.

Last year was unreal for me:

There is an elementary school on the road to university, but you never see a police there during the day. I was caught doing 62 km/h with max 50 km/h at 3 o'clock in the morning without traffic. The cop was hidden behind a tree holding the radar! I first thought he was a sniper! Two cars coming behind me were stopped as well

I was fined also for illegal parking having half the car on the pavement and the rest on the road(no parking available for all students)

When i got rear clear lights, I got a ticket for the flicker being red instead of orange!

I got away with just a warning for using slightly smaller number plates. :p The cop was staring at the plate for a couple of minutes until I told him I had 8 points already otherwise I would be in deep trouble!! :nerv:

I'm not far from loosing my driving licence for these bullshits!
 
im very impressed you can make up your own plates. In USA we have to go to the Dept of Motor Vehicle and they either A, issue a plate with certain letter and number combo u have no control over, or for a $50 fee, you can customize it to your liking but has to be certain number of spaces. I like you can make up your own though, what happens if theres two of the same ones out there, dont it make it confusing or is your plate not linked to your car?
