Hi everyone and happy new year!! right what it is ive bought my old ek9 back and have noticed straight away that the vtec does not kick in for at least 5-10 miles down the road when it would usually kick in much sooner as in like 2-5 miles also ive noticed the water temp gauge is always running cold-ish instead of half way any ideas??

thank you

If the engine is not warm enought, the vtec wont engage.

If your motor is running too cold, it's probably the thermostat
that is not working correctly.

I agree...vtec no like cold. :nono:

right ive spoken to the guy that i sold the car to and he has confirmed that he has changed the oil a couple of weeks ago!! 10/40 semi synthetic but for some reason did not replace the oil filter!! :angry2: also when i drive for about 10 miles the water temp goes just above min and if you put your foot down it goes quarter. If i leave to idle it picks up to half way (normal) and the fan cuts it fine with no problems at all but once i move off again it drops to min-quarter when usually when i owned it before it would stay at half way all the times. Do you think its anything to do with the weather because when i owned the car before it was summer-ish and now since ive had it its been snowing and freezing everyday nearly??? Is there an oil that heats up quicker so my vtec works faster as my engine takes ages to heat up or do you think the oil thats in the car now is not right for the engine???

oil should be fine mate its what im using and as said sounds like your thermostat

Just been out in the car now to get some petrol was waiting in the cue for a while my temp went half way and the fan cut in also my vtec was working 100% fine before arriving because its 10 miles away from home. Filled the car up then left straight away onto a 2 mile stretch and surprise no vtec until a mile-ish after vtec started to work fine again all the way surely the engine wont cool down that fast in the time it took me to but petrol in the car!!!

Lad a thermostat aint expensive so change it..That is what is causing it..Also dont even try hit vtec when the engine is cold..Dont be high reving it..I nearly always leave my ek9 10 mins to heat up before driving and even at that wait another 10 before driving it hard..Change the thermostat and it should fix your problem

Thanks for your help everyone i will order one ASAP now, where is the best place to get one or can i just replace it with a aftermarket part ie from my local part supplier for example unipart and etc or does it have to be genuine honda part also would i need to replace the switch as well

Thanks Again

genuine honda part would be better but im sure any parts supplier would have it

edit: let the engine warm up properly before ragging it these aint pug 106 runabouts. look after it and it will look after you :drive:

Hi what part number would i give to them because when i give the reg usually it does not bring the details of the car or is there a uk spec civic that has the same thermostat that would be the same as mine also would i need the thermostat switch as well??? thank you

Ye i always let the engine heat up to normal every time with all my cars for the reason is (1) its good for the engine (2) i like to jump into a warm car (softy getting old lol) especially on turbo/supercharge cars i always warm up and let them cool down

give your local Honda your chassis number. only use genuine Honda parts mate, will last alot longer! use the "ultimate parts list" in the Resource Area" section of this forum and you will get the part number!! may be good to change thermostat switch at same time and get new coolant also!! I would change your oil and filter again too! :) check plugs and leads and stuff too and when was the timing belt last done?

cant be too sure bud! like said above look after it and it will look after you!! :)

Hi just replaced my thermostat today along with new spark plugs while i was there and what a difference, the temperature heats up in minutes now and stays bang on half way at all times also the vetc works much sooner :drive: plugs needed changing so im glad i bought them the same time. Big thanks to everyone for your help

Just remember thats only the water temp, oil takes longer so dont just start nailing it as soon as that gets to half way! How long do you leave it from cold before you hit vtec?
