the bottom one looks like a turbo timer. the top one might be a vtec contoller not sure tho

thx reply
do you think ek9 need turbo time for the NA car.
or any ek9 user have 1 of this?

well their a turbo or na timer.

they just cool down the engine before shuuting off

think a good few people have them:nice:

Pointless gadget in my opinion even for a turbo car. In fact I'd go as far as to say they are a bad idea.

When stopped with the engine running in the RX-7 after a drive the oil temp used to shoot up because no air was passing through the oil coolers. By just driving off-boost for the last few miles the car had cooled down nicely. Then just park up and switch off....

Cheers,
Alex

Yeah I always wondered how a parked car can cool down when left running without any air passing by the radiator I assume there designed for cars that would be running very hard and producing very high tempertures that when stopped they get a chance to cool down somewhat. My mate had a astra once that blew its headgasket left running in the yard LOL

turbo timers arent about leaving to cool down, the idea is to keep oil pressure to the turbo while its still spinning after boosting.

My JDM 96 Spec ITR came with an APEXi Turbo Timer... very random...
Do I leave it in there or take it out?
WHY did the previous owner (in Japan) install this?!

turbo timers arent about leaving to cool down, the idea is to keep oil pressure to the turbo while its still spinning after boosting.

But isnt the idea to cool the turbo down by the oil acting as a cooling medium so that when the engine is turned off the turbo wont cook the oil left inside it or something like that

Turbo timers are usefull for a cooldown if used properly.

I had one on my previous car that when it activated it turned on the fan, opened the stat and turned the car off when a certain temperature had been achieved.

This it the best way to use one on an n/a engine. Other than that they really have no use bar on turbos to keep oil pressure to the turbo while its still spinning after boosting as "b16 mini" says.

Its the engine that provoids the oil pressure not the fact that there is a turbo timer on a car, if the engine was running without a turbo timer it would still be circulating oil, all the turbo timer is doing is keeping the engine on so the turbo cools down preventing coking of the bearings

Exactly - hence driving off boost for the last few miles of a journey cools the oil much more effectively due to the additional effect of the air movement.

keeping oil pressure is the important thing, not what the oil temp is.
no pressure will do more damage than high oil temps.
hot pressurised oil running through a turbo is better than it spinning away with unpressurised cool oil

I dont see what oil pressure has to do with the function of a turbo timer. The turbo timer wont care if your motor is making oil pressure or not it only keeps the igniton on for a set amount of time to allow the turbo time to cool. and correct the temp of the oil isnt the object its the cooling of the turbo through the obsorption of heat by the oil circulating.

yes, it keeps the engine running to produce the oil pressure, to keep an oil wedge around the bearings, oil temp is nothing to do with it really, with the engine running the exhaust gasses are just heating up the compressor housing and warming your oil more, think about it.

I never said oil temperture was to do with it. I said the oil circulating cools the turbo am I not correct?

well sort of, it needs to keep circulating as a glowing hot turbo would just destroy the properties of the oil if the oil was just sitting in the oil ways and around the bearings in the turbo and did not have any flow,

as for why it requires pressure,
after a hard drive a turbo will spin for quite a long time even if the engine is off, right now imagine your crank spinning with no engine oil pressure, your bearing shells would not like that would they,, its the same principle really, bearings have a tolerance and dont just need to be lubricated they need to have an oil wedge which takes up the slack and reduces metal on metal wear.

i hope that i've explained that right:p
