which gearbox is best to use?

no massive difference in them,if you lose against a teg with the s80 ull lose with the s4c aswell.

watch the best motoring 'type R legends' comparison between the 98 spec and the 96 spec ITR's.....then bear in mind the 98 spec is heavier, and has larger heavier wheels.

also have a look at the ITR section of honda-tech.com, 4.7fd is one of the the most highly recommended mods, loads of people have done it and reported on the benefits (usdm ITR's have 96 spec/ek9 ratio's)

a 197hp b18c, with 4.7fd, and 15's.......should, in theory, everything else being equal(ie not heavier than the car you're against and have same hp engines etc), be faster than any b series car honda produced from the factory.

my guess is most people that are stating the s4c is just as good or better have not tried both ratios in the same car. i have, and lots of US ITR owners have aswell, so go and get a look at their opinions aswell rather than than the views of a forum where the majority of users use one particular kind of box.

i'm not saying anyone here is wrong, just the general consensus on here seems different than the overall opinion that i would expect to see on a forum where a lot of posters have done the exact thing you are asking about

Thing is if you fit a 4.7 FD in a S4C box then you have a different box altogether to a S80..........

My gearbox is built with all oem parts, 4.7FD and a mixture of gears from both the S4C and S80. As it works out, 5th is a fair bit shorter and the rest of the gears aren't much different to a standard S4C

Side by side with my mates 96 spec which is stripped with full exhaust/decat and a very healthy engine (mine is still a "lowly" b16b with bolt ons too but still have the cat, also stripped) the cars are identical straight line until 5th where I pull away a bit now

Basically, fit a S4C box, if it's not up to your expectations then take the box out and try a different final drive. Both the S4C and S80 are no where near perfect ratio wise and can be improved on

No point in modifying it first off as you may not like mega short gearing and cruising along at high revs all the time (5k revs in 5th gets 80mph in mine)
