looking for some peoples thoughts on this.

we all know the ek9 is a rare car, but do you think it would be as popular if honda marketed it outside of japan, EG in the uk?

Well then it wouldnt be classed as an import thus making it cheaper to insure it, i think the answer would be yes there are a **** load of so called Honda "enthusiasts" that have never even heard of the EK9 out there! I think it would be popular as it can see off alot higher powered cars with tripple the price

i think it would be extremely popular if it was sold in USA.

Not world wide. We didn't even get the VTi :(

I think Honda could made crapload had they made a US Type R and VTi/SiR hatch. Or at least they could kept making Si hatches but put B16's in instead of D16Z6/Y8's. They finally started getting a clue in 99 making the Si coupe with the B16A2. Then we got the Si hatch again in 2002 but with an underpowered engine (our 02-05 Si is an EP3 but an EK9 has more power than this thing, 160HP out of a K20 FTL). Then Honda really got a clue in 06 and has made the closest to a CTR yet in the US with the 197HP Si coupe then in 07 the Sedan was introduced alongside of it. We even have an overpriced Mugen Civic Si Sedan now. Our Si is supposedly a better vehicle than the Euro Type R Civic being lighter and having a better suspension but the JDM Type R beat us out with an even better suspension and more powerful motor and it's lighter to boot I think.

I'm tellin ya, Japanese companies screwed us good in the US.

yes it is...that is why it is special.

If the EK9 was mass produced worldwide, then that special rare appeal would not be the same.

Hence my 1st reply.... No. Simple. LOL

this is why JDM cars & bikes stand out from the rest of the world, much better build quality & higher spec. the japanese have all the great stuff.

wasnt that because of the strict emissions standards in the US?

I would say not if we still have B16A2/3 powered Del Sols and EM1 Civic Si's but very very few of them. We also had a few B18C Integras and H22A Preludes but that's it. They could have easily given us a VTi/SiR but they didn't. There just aren't very many pre 2002 DOHC VTEC cars in US (out of the factory, there are PLENTY of swapped Civics like mine). Plus even with JDM motors people still pass emissions here.

Agreed. They would have sold like hotcakes if they made more ITR's and CTR's for the US. People in the U.S WANT fast factory cars, like the recent corvette Zo6 and mazdaspeed3. Nowadays, a clean SI, ITR or even GSR is highly sought. Speaking of the Zo6, in the US we love cars that perform very well for little money, so if honda did sell the CTR they would probably delete some things like recaro's and AC (as they did with the ITR).

and not just Honda. Nissan could have at least given us an SR20DET S13/14. The only company that didn't completely screw us is Toyota cause we did get the 300HP 2JZ-GTE Supra like theirs.

Still Honda could have sold a load of cars with just dropping B-Series in, instead of all the dern D-series. And Nissan could probably have sold more S13/14's if they even just turbo'd the KA24's.

Nissan should have offered the KA for the moms who want the convertible or people who are cheap, and the SR20det for those who wanted a sports car out of their S13/S14.

i think the 9 would still be as popular if it was sold world wide....its not the fact it was only sold in japan that made it popular if that was the case would a jap import nissan micra not be as popular haha....its the handlin the power it has for a 1.6na the looks the ability it has to mow other supposedly higher speced cars off the road that cost twice as much that make it so popular...well atleast thats wat does it for me!

EK9 became so popular because it doesn't need words to be described. You just see, hear, feel and you say WOW....

The thing is, honda already had the DC2R selling in US, UK, AU etc... both cars almost same weight but the ITR with the mighty 1.8L

If the EK9 came with the B18C, then this would be a different story, as there shouldn't be any competition with the HOT HATCHES.
