IMO no. The UK has spent 20 odd years trying to avoid the Euro for good reason. It has aided the destruction of Ireland, Spain, Greece etc etc. Whilst not being as extreme as the Euro, a currency union using the pound would not have been good for a new Independent Scotland as it would leave control of monetary policy and to some extent fiscal policy in the hands of the Bank of England who unlike the current situation would have no obligation to thinking about the needs of Scotland/Wales etc. This would mean interest rates would be out of the control of the new Scottish Gov's hands; this is a key issue dictating the cost of loans, mortgages etc. These loans and mortages are what fund and back small business'.
The second idea of Dollarisation or as Salmond has been calling it 'Sterlingisation' is even worse. This is the economic policy that lead to such currency crisis as:
South American late 1980's
South American 2002
Argentina 1998-2002
East Asain 'Tigers' 1997
A truly folly plan, this is what Salmond referred too when he repeatedly said 'They cant stop us having the pound' like it was some kind of benefit. What a fat ride.
The third plan was the new currency, this is the option I know the least about, but as far as I read/watched this was not really dealt with in any great depth by either the better together or the independence campaigns.
A new currency would involve massive infrastructure changes and transaction costs, but a true Scottish currency could potentially avoid the pitfalls of the shared currency. However, this option could also backfire badly, as Scotland as a country would have no 'reputation' to support its essential foreign borrowing, and the currency could be highly unstable destroying the price of exports. Furthermore without prudence, there could be serious consequences regarding inflation.
Even if there was a new Scottish currency however, if Scotland had then joined the Eurozone, it was have replaced by the cursed Euro.
Basically, IMO, there was no currency option that was not worse than the current setup. The potential for a new currency did exist, but with such little attention being paid to that option, there was no way I was voting yes, even though I agreed with the vast majority of the Independance campaigns policies.
Soz for the essay lol
