ok, so I phoned up the DVLA to try and get some information and they were incredibly tight lipped and unhelpful. All they told me to do was fill in a section of the V5 with the amended details and send it off (they didn't say anything about requiring proof of the Vin number etc, which I found...

Well, I suppose I shall phone the DVLA tomorrow and see if they can shed any light on the situation. I had one potential buyer who reckoned it may have been stolen etc but I'm almost 100% sure it's nothing as bad as that. Hopefully it is just an administration error. Cheers guys

The irish documents match the Chassis VIN.

well from some of the irish paperwork I have, I can see that everything seems alright in terms of vin number etc before it came to Britain. (it appears to have been registered correctly in Ireland) Its a pain in the arse as it has put off a couple of potential buyers so far. Is it possible...

Yep, the vin number is consistent throughout the car chassis wise, so I'm pretty sure it's not been a chop up and reweld job. Closest thing to the actual vin number on the V5 is under the engine code on the V5 where it has the chassis vin but backwards... How does someone even do that...
