Hi guys, first time I have posted in here for quite some time, but I appear to have a problem.

Anyway, I have recently put my EK9 up for sale and have just realised that the chassis code (vin) does not match the engine number and also that the VIN does not match the VIN as registered on the V5. From the owner history the car appears to be legit as it seems that all the previous owners have been on this forum at some point or another, however it is obviously a concern for me.

I.e
Chassis code is ek9-11xxxx40
Engine code is 11xxxx25
And the v5 registered vin is ek911xxxxx11

It just seems to be all over the place.:nerv:

Anyone have any ideas?

Vin number on car an logbook don't match up? That sounds very dodgy man

Yep, the vin number is consistent throughout the car chassis wise, so I'm pretty sure it's not been a chop up and reweld job.
Closest thing to the actual vin number on the V5 is under the engine code on the V5 where it has the chassis vin but backwards... How does someone even do that?!

Anyone else been in a similar situation?

If it's useful I can pop up some pictures.

Could be the cars been re shelled and used plates off another car?

The ek9 you have is from Ireland originally?

well from some of the irish paperwork I have, I can see that everything seems alright in terms of vin number etc before it came to Britain. (it appears to have been registered correctly in Ireland)

Its a pain in the arse as it has put off a couple of potential buyers so far.

Is it possible that this is just a massive F**k up on the DVLAs part?

Cheers for the replies so far.

Yes it could be the dvla F***** up some where and to be honest most of the times they do

Your best of ringing them up and getting it corrected

Well, I suppose I shall phone the DVLA tomorrow and see if they can shed any light on the situation. I had one potential buyer who reckoned it may have been stolen etc but I'm almost 100% sure it's nothing as bad as that.
Hopefully it is just an administration error.

Cheers guys

Your engine and VIN numbers are fine, they almost never match exactly, usually they are a few digits off. This could be a DVLA cockup, I bought a three door Seat Ibiza once that was registered by DVLA as 5 door, I just sent them a letter and they changed it. Might be a little trickier with a VIN code tho. Would certainly put me off if I was buying the car.

yeah thats right the vin number never maches the engine number ;)
cheers

DVLA do make mistakes...I bought a golf TDI and the was shocked on how much the road tax was ....It was same as my mates and double the price...it turned out the co2 on the log book was incorrect...they would not change it coz it was an import origionally...really poor service from DVLA...hope you get it sorted mate :nice:

I can see how it would put buyers off.

My money is on a dvla cock up.

ok, so I phoned up the DVLA to try and get some information and they were incredibly tight lipped and unhelpful. All they told me to do was fill in a section of the V5 with the amended details and send it off (they didn't say anything about requiring proof of the Vin number etc, which I found quite strange).

So hopefully my brand spanking new V5 turns up in a couple of weeks and ill open it to find that the details are now correct and also perhaps a covering letter from the Head of the DVLA telling me how sick my car is, something along the lines of "Sick car bro" etc etc.
