Hi all i'm just deciding on what oil to use, i have read mixed reviews on 5w 40 some say its to thin some say that it is ok. What would you suggest. I know 10w 40 is what honda recommend, but i also read good stuff on 5w-40. I know this has been covered millions of times i just cba to look through every thread lol

Thanks

Also depends on the condition of your motor and how it uses oil currently with what ever you are using. If its already using a little oil and you have to top up every so often, chances are it'll be too thin and you'll end up refilling with oil way more often. I was also searching this subject for my b16a6 a while back.

I've been using 5w40 fully synthetic for 18 months now keep an eye on it though as I top up near weekly

Go with what Honda recommend, they say it for a reason, also if u go on the opie oils site, they recommend it 10w40 too, I been using it for my B18C, all good!

I use 5w50 fully synthetic in my B16A2 on track.

It doesnt burn a drop all day, with no visable smoke from exhaust during gearchanges. I usually swap it out after the trackday and go back to 10w40 semi.

I havent swapped it out yet as i plan another track day in a fortnight, but its too thin for day to day driving, and doesnt get a chance to warm up properly. in the past 14 days (about 200 miles) the oil level is at the bottom of the dipstick already and I can see it weaping down the block under the vtec solenoid.

Usually if i put 10w40 in it doesnt use any oil on day to day driving and no visable oil leaks.. lol

I tried using the 10w40 oil on track and the car was like a choochoo train during gear changes, and oil consumption was up also.. ha

point is, use the oil for the conditions the car is intended to be drivin in :drive:

I use 5w40.
Provides better start up protection in theory.
Can't see any negative to using it??

The EK9 manual also states 5w40 is fine.
Along with 10w40 which is fine (but with a reduced temperature range)

10w30 is fine for uk climate and 20w40, 20w50 (last two only down to -10degrees) are also acceptable according to Honda.

So honda don't just state one oil grade.
