hi all dont mean to be a complete pain but i was wonderring if someone could help me out with a few questions i have for all you vtec boys. i've been speaking to my friend about my options when buying a b series car as he has a 96 ITR with 98 spec kit. Now he has been telling me despite the power standard to standard an ek4 is easier to extract power from is he right? Apparently the b16b isnt as easily tuneable in terms of power gains in comparison to the b16a2 engine. He is suggesting for me to buy an ek4 and tune it, but i prefer the look of the ek9 and the interior just makes me want to *** wee lol. He has even said to me that in a straight line the difference between the vti and type r would be minimal. Is this true?

I'm getting the vtec bug big time after being in his car more regularly and having a few shots of it. He has also said that the b16a2 produces 170bhp and is only found in the civic jordans and that although the ek9 is supposed to be around 185bhp when imported and running on vpower petrol at 99ron octane that the car wont be anywhere near that figure and would more be around the 170-175ish. Its really confusing me as i dont know what to do and i'd also like to know how different the cars are in terms of top speed once the ek9 is delimited and 0-60 times as the whole debate over 5.7-6.5 secs is a bit of a mystery to me for the ek9 and the top speed of somewhere in the region of 130-145 sounds pretty vague and is this top speed achieved using sat nav or is it on mph converted speedometers? Sorry for all the questions guys just really want to know what route to go down that will give me the biggest smile on my face when driving it.

blAh don't listen to your friend.

the B16B might be more challenging to make more power than its rated 185bhp but it can still be done.

It just depends on the depth of your pockets and how deep you are willing to dig to get more power.

Why buy a 16A2 and then spend a bunch of money only to get the same power as a 16B stock??

Your buddy's math is obviously 1 + 1 = 11 here.

I know b16a2 is in any of the ek/em vti civics and produces 158hp standard.

Correct. Civic Jordan is ~160BHP

Nowhere near as quick as a UKDM DC2 from experience....:secret:

An EK9 on the other hand is every bit as fast as the Teg with ~185BHP....

There is more to the EK9 than the engine though. It weighs less than an EK4, handles better & has a slip-diff as standard.....

So in answer to your questions

1.B16A2 is 160BHP. No easier to "extract" power from, certainly not over & above EK9 power....

2. EK9 noticably faster in a straight-line.

3. Power figures depend on the RR. If an EK9 only makes "175BHP" on a given set of rollers you could reasonably expect a VTi EK4 to only make "150BHP". I.E both down on standard figures.

4. Top speed is 140+ no problem. Hardly what you would expect if the cars are well short of the claimed power figures.:p

Your friend is prob trying to get you to buy an EK4 so you cant keep up with him in an
EK9! lol :)

Like Chrismc says in answers 1,2,3 & 4 - that is why you would buy an EK9 mate!

thanks guys im defintely feeling the 9 might be just perfect for me now. i thought the engines were a bit different tho as i thought the b16a produced 158bhp and the b16a2 produced more? With the handling being better and the reduced weight the 9 is getting more and more appealling to me. I am utterly in love with the interior of the car and the exterior is good enough too although i am a firm believer in only changing asthetics in subtle ways. Interior mods would be non existant apart from a apexi vtec controller which i love in my mates jdm dc2.
new questions lol
1.Were would everyone suggest buying a 9 from? i've seen some on fleabay and pistonheads but am unsure if they are lemons lol.
2.What should i watch out for when buying one and another thing how can you check the history of the car? I really dont want to buy a lemon
3.What should be the first few things i shoud do to a 9? eg manifold, decat, induction kit, coilovers, brake upgrade, mfactory final drive etc and which brands are best in terms of power gains? another friend bought an ep3 uk ctr and put a tannabe cat back and a few other modifications and lost bhp on the same dyno :nono:

A 9 is defo the way forward mate!:nice:

I think b16a1 & a2 both produce same power. B16B is best anyway oo B18:p! Yup no need to change the interior or exterior wotsoeva! It is already beautifull!:win:

1. There are a few on sale on this forum, speak to type R Dunk, John Fallon (private imports) or other importers on this site. check the resource and for sale sections on this forum. Everyone on here will make sure you dont get a lemon!lol:D I'd maybe stay away from ebay. Pistonheads is ok just be wary and check the car over thoroughly! take a mechanic with you, thats what I do!

2. Check Blinx's guide on this forum on buying an ek9 and wot to look for. Use the search tool on the forum and you will find everything you need. When you find a document that is of use to you save it to a folder on your computer that way you can refer back to it, thats what I do!:nice: If you go to look at a 9 make sure it has oil, check for rust mainly on arches and under back bumper, maybe make sure its been undersealed! ask the previous owner for service history, reciepts, etc! Get an HPI check - text the work "check" followed by the reg of the car to 88600! look close to panels for spraying or over spray, etc!

3. First thing to do when you get a 9 i'd say is clean, polish, wash the baby!:nice: Then service it, oils, fluids, filters, plugs, etc! Then get out driving it, experiencing it! :drive::bow:

there is no mods you should do to your 9 first, just whatever you feel you would like! dont just buy mods for the sake of it, have a purpose! Thats what I've learnt. also only buy a new part if its broke. Like say your standard exhaust breaks then that gives you an excuse to buy an aftermarket one like, Tanabe, Spoon, HKS, Apexi to name a few. Check build ups, projects, memebers rides, etc and that will give you an idea of what you can do to your car! have a good browse dude!:nice:

The ek9 in its standard state is the perfect car, like I have the stock suspension on my ek9 and it handles like a dream, I have stock brakes and brakes are immense! not alot you have to change my friend!:D

Good luck anyway!:nice:

i'm from hamilton just outside of glasgow. Thanks for the replies guys im going to try and get one asap and keep it as i get it for a while till i get used to the vtec as its a whole different experience from my crappy gti which runs out of poke top end unlike a vtec engine but i reckon handling wise will be hard to top my little car but heres to hoping a 9 does (if not an upgrade to coilies will be on the wishlist). My next car has to be a 9 now i will not settle for less than perfection :p i really want to experience a 9 right now lol need to get rid of my lupo aka the pupo now lol just need to find some mug wishing to buy a mint lupo gti and then maybe sell my supercharger and intercooler and boost pipes to whomever buys it :D
Once its gone its ek9 time and a new slogan of bye bye gti! :drive:
