B16B choking idle

Cleaned the IACV? Have you another 02 sensor you could try? Plug out the 02 sensor then pull the back up fuse for a minute. stick the fuse back in and start it up, you'll get a check light as 02 sensor is plugged out but see if the idle is any better with 02 sensor disconnected and if it is then its time to get a new one.

IACV was cleaned out not long ago when i removed the inlet manifold to clean it out also, all refitted with new oem gaskets and PCV is removed running a proper breather so there is ZERO oily residue running through the inlet to clog these up again

The car did fuel quite heavily with the Spoon ECU so guess it could have messed up the O2 sensor, will look into that too, cheers :nice:

Forgot to mention, this hesitation happens on idle once the revs settle down from cold start, also if you hold the revs up to about 3k when stationary you can hear it almost missfire and the revs start to drop a bit then raise again

Drove the car out the drive and back in the other night and it seems ok under load

Have youtried your OEM ECU out? Maybe be poor connection or loose solder.... Just something to try.

Sounds just like a faulty 02 sensor to me mate

Hi
I would put money on it being your distributer on it's way out.
Two out of the three I have replaced started hesitating at 3 - 4k rpm under light throttle. Then after a week or two they got lumpy on idle just like yours.
Do you know any one with a B16/B18 Type R you could borrow one from?
Good luck Dunx

well ive ordered new leads, ICM and o2 sensor. so hopefully will do the trick

if it IS the new dizzy then at least i have all new/almost new parts so could buy a bare dizzy from honda which is loads cheaper

Please update...I am interested in this problem as I have been tracking down the very same issues for over a year now. Cold or Hot engine, it would for no reason studder/loose all power/no acceleration, at 3K RPM. No throttle response at all, then for no reason again, it would come back on. Very "jerky" and I can only imagine what this is doing to the clutch and tranny.

I also have also replaced, like you have:

-Distributor cap (oem honda)
-Rotor arm (oem honda)
-Plugs (NGK laser iridium)
-Oil & filter
-Fuel filter
-TPS (oem quality, set up correctly for closed and WOT)
-MAP sensor (oem quality)
-IACV (oem honda)
-Spoon leads/plug wires
-Fuel pump (255lph)
-Coolant temp sensors (both on the head)

and still the issue remains, but with a twist, the issue has gone into hiding, it has cleared up for no apparent reason...because it stopped happening well after the last effort to fix it. I last changed both coolant sensors on the head: sensor going to the ECU/ECM and the sensor going to the dash. I was still having the issue after changing the sensors. But one week later, I no longer have the issue. It has gone into hiding...

Thing is mine is ok under load, haven't driven it far, just out the drive and back in, but only seems to happen when at idle or holding revs in neutral

Hope I get it sorted soon, having waited for 5 weeks for dampers to return from servicing (never tried this suspension), i'm itching to drive it :angry2:

Hence I think its your 02 sensor as its only happening while in closed loop(lite load) Stick your hand down behind intake mani and plug the 02 sensor out see how it behaves then

UPDATE

Replaced the o2 sensor and fitted a new set of NGK blue leads

Idling like a champ now :win:

Yeah going to fire through monies to you tomorrow :nice:

Flat spot gone too, although running a standard ecu right now. Off for mapping on 4th of March :nerv:

Good to hear you got it sorted these 02 sensors are starting to show there age.

Second O2 sensor i've fitted to the car now

Design of the sensor element looks much better on the new one, think the fueling of the spoon ecu took its toll on the last one

I have had a problem like this, small bit different,

my car runs okay but wont idle correct, also doesnt idle atal when it is cold the engine just cuts out

i can keep the engine running by keeping the revs at around 1000rpm

when it warms up the engine idles at around 500-600rpm

any idea on what is going on?

thanks

That would be the IACV sticking , to check its working ok , pull off the intake pipe , the lower port in front of the butterfly on the throttlebody should be sucking air when cold and then when the car is fully warmed up should not be sucking air. Pull the IACV off and clean it with brake cleaner , put it back on and reset the idle (do a search its on here), also check your coolant level , its not too watery and its fully bled out.

Hope it helps :nice:
