wot like guys.. so we were mapping my b18 eg6 on satarday just started to bring the revs up past 8500rpm and with no warning bang.. started to rattle.. stopped and whiped my sump off to find number 1 rod had spun the bearing filled my sump with white metal and pretty much destroyed its self...it was a brand new full engine build with 12.5.1 comp ratio?? ran perfect for the running in period so am abit confused here?? eny suggestions would be very helpfull guys....:(

Did you change the oil regularly during the run in? was it running a map for your setup or standard ecu?

What does that main look like to ? You may of had some sort of blockage i.e. a piece of silicon. What bearings are you using to and what were you clearences ?

^^I think we have the right idea sticking with the b16's:p

cheers for quik responce guys... first up the cars on hondata was mapped for my set up ..running in period as i said was fine... changed the oil twice in 1000 miles then before we started running hard revs gave it sum fully synthetic.. the engine was built by agra engineering..1 of the very popular engineering shops around my area of the country....they worked out all my clearances etc.so this im not sure of.dont have my build sheet here with me...engine has arp,s and acl race bearings through out tho..thanks for eny info or help guys much appreciated..:nice:

You probably should have changed the oil a few more times within the 1000miles. Ideally let it run for 20mins then drop the oil out and filter, fit new filter and oil and cover a couple of hundred miles before changing it again. How was your oil pressure looking?(assuming you had a oil press gauge)

i dont have an oil pressure gauge but light never came on when running..although when cold the light was abit slow going out after start up... no noises tho like i said before it just went bang after first high rev...with this high compression should i have extra breathers set up for block, rocker cover etc??

Possibly oil pump failure if clearances were ok or debris ended up between the bearing or blocked a gallery....It wouldn't hurt to have a catch can setup.

Have you stripped the engine yet to inspect the damage?

no not yet mate just sump off etc to have a look...im at work..lol.. will be stripping it out tonight for more investigation..oil pump was new tho like everything else at the time of build...havent even spoken to my builders yet wanted sum inside info from the guys first.. will post up the damages after ive stripped the motor down ..cheers dude.:nice:

When you say the oil light was a bit slow going off how long did it take ? This is a sign that your pump is locking from some crap thats gone through it. I bet you this engine hasnt been cleaned properly and the pumps been damaged from some swarf passing threw it resulting in low oil pressure. That would cause you to spin a bearing at 8000 rpm definatly. Take the pump off, remove the back cover and inspect it. I bet its scored badly. I hate oil pumps so much and i've had a few fail on me. The reason i havent spun a bearing though is because i have a oil pressure gauge what i always keep my eye on. Oil pressure gauges are must, you could of saved this engine if you had one.

These B18 Stories scare the shite out of me. Hope you get it sorted mate!!! :nice:

Are you not my friend anymore lol ? I wanted to call you to see how your getting on but i havent got your number anymore. Txt or call me when you can.

Not another B18 gone pop. Def putting me off the hole B18 thing. They all seem to be breaking on well looked after engines with no notice whatsoever.

If I was you I would just get a totally stock B20 bottom end, stick your VTEC head on and get it dyno'd again.

Good luck, Dunx

There's always a reason why a engine spins a bearing or fails Dunx. Engines are like clockwork, everything has to be spot on. Oil pressure, Oil temp, Oil quality and the right clearences are what keeps it together and running good.

Just read this thread.
Sorry to hear about your spun bearing.

I do agree on the oil change on run in, you should have changed your oil more during this process. I also agree with the oil pressure gauge, its a must have, or go home.

And for all the worry with B18s poping, I just had a USDM B18C5 built up and its running very nice after everything was replaced as well, including a new oil pump, like your build. As Rich777 states, engines are like clockwork, engines need to be built exactly correct, or at 8000+ RPM things starts to go very wrong. Same with run in period, it needs to be done properly with gauges.

Can anything be salvaged from this engine?

ok guys the input is spot on... just going now to pull the motor out.. see wot the extent of the damage is.. if i go down the b20 road like dunk says?? is it not true they dont like the high revving???.. my engine was full build all brand new parts nothing was cheap crap!!!! cost me a fortune... the joys !!!.. wil post up later in the week with my progress...:nice:

No they don't like high reving but you don't need to rev them high.

cool but i have skunk cams spec 2,s they make power real high up do they not???
