awryt guys got a wee problem when i was out driving last night

was driving along and all of a sudden the speedo died, was working fine up to that point but now nothing at all, so far its popped 7.5A fuse which is the altinator and speed sensor, i replaced this with a 10A and thats popped aswell, theres no corrosion on the VSS multiplug and iv looked and had a feel at the wires under the manifold, so far the wires look ok, i got a loan of a multimeter and checked the voltage of the battery with the car running and its sitting at 12V, could the charging be this low because the fuse is blown or am i looking at an altinator as well ? should i try replacing the vss or does anyone have the location of the multiplugs so i can check the wires between them, ino where the vss multiplug is but duno where the one is at the other side
thanks in advanced :nice:

Sounds like you have a short in a power/ground wire somewhere. You are heading in the right direction with the voltmeter. Now you just have to find the wiring issue.

just went out there and put a 12v to the middle pin wich was the black and yellow which iv been told is the live, the ground is getting 12v if i earth one probe and use the other to test the pins and the signil wire is getting a constant 12v aswell, am i right in thinkin its a open curcuit in the vss ?

Give me time to check but I'm sure there was a warranty recall on some civics. It's a wire that earths out under the inlet manifold and causes this fuse in particular to pop.

I read another user's solution and after trying many things...YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS.

Look under the hood and find some wiring grouped under the intake. The wiring has been rubbing against a metal piece and this rubbing has caused the wires to be bare. The short is hurting the operating of your speedometer. With some electrical tape and some effort you can fix this in 20 minutes. Wrap the electrical tape around the wires where the wires are rubbing against the metal piece. It will be obvious if you get your elbows a little dirty.

Otherwise you can try and replace the VSS and Speedometer only to be out hundreds of dollars and still have a faulty speedometer.

I did it tonight, and after months of anguish I fixed my 98 civic.

Had the same fault on my ej9 a while ago and turns out a wire was earthing out.
