Crackling sound when I turn the steering wheel!! =S

Hey guys,
I have an EJ9 1998 and all of a sudden when I turn the steering wheel either left or even right now ... a kind of cracking, mashing sound comes from inside the wheel =/ Could it be a shaft or something like that and how much are they please?
Also is it dangerous to drive with the sound? As in will it just randomly snap in the middle of a drive?

sounds like your drive shaft mate, if it was me i'd get it replaced asap

How loud is the crackling?
I had a crackling on mine but it was that loud and it was just the dust sheild on the back of the disc

sounds like the driveshaft is broken up mate does the wheel shake above 50?

someone wouldnt have put cable ties on the inside of your wheel or on the drive shaft?
