ek9 seats on track ?


Id guess the stock recaros will be safer than fake "brides"
Knockoffs are just made to look like the real thing. No 'real' testing has been undergone, so I wouldn't buy them.

It is your life on the line.
 
It was the hinge part I was worried about and that video has really put me off using the recaro now my thinking was if they put them in a car that was kind of track orientated they would be fine but the fact the seats are now 15 years old at least is a bit off putting
 
You can achieve far higher impact speeds on the road than on the track - when two vehicles travelling at 60mph meet head on it is like hitting a wall at 120mph (well, near enough - crumple zones etc) . Two speeding vehicles doing 80 - you can do the maths.

This isn't actually the case, although I can understand why people think this.

The energy absorbed when two cars collide head on is 0.5mv^2+0.5mv^2= mv^2. Whereas a car hitting a solid object, such as a wall, is 0.5m(2v)^2=2mv^2, therefore twice as much energy is absorbed when colliding with a wall at twice the speed.

This theory was actually tested by mythbusters. Although the speeds are 120mph the actual impact suffered by each is almost exactly the same as a 60mph crash. Because both of the cars are absorbing the impact, a wall doesn't.
 
The way you lot are thinking, you all might as well get WRC prepped shells, carbon Kevlar seats etc.
That was a freak accident in that video. No reclining seat will do well with that sort of impact. If they were that bad how come the drivers seat didn't snap?
 
I've still got my oem seats, use them on track aswell. Just rather have a proper bucket.
Think the driver hit the b pillar in that video, was out cold for afew seconds.

The driver probably braced himself with the steering wheel putting less load on the seat as well

I've got a cage going in my car, and some fixed back seats in the attic that i'l probably use.

Personally i would rather spend money on safety than hundreds of £s on some jdm bling exhaust or other rubbish that does nothing

How ever I understand what you are saying as there has to be a limit to how far you go with the whole safety thing

-It looked less than freak imo. Appeared to lose the back end of the car, and slid backwards at quit a pace into the wall. If the circumstances to the changed even slightly, its very possible to see how they might not have walked away. To my eyes, being knocked unconscious whilst wearing a helmet is concerning :( suggesting high impact forces.

I think it's just a matter of how much risk you are personally willing to accept; for several years formula one refused to address safety concerns & I think its fair to say objectively that the protections in place were very inadequate. But for the drivers - they accepted the inherent & residual risks involved - and that was their choice to make.

For those with the means, investing in £600-1000 safety equipment to keep you safe (or at least a degree safer) in the event of an accident, freak or otherwise, is a worthwhile & justifiable investment. Leaving them with a much lower residual risk ratio to accept than the next person who did not spend the same. The next person may simply not have the means, or its a choice between, spending the money on the safety equipment or not being able to pay for time on track and fuel - and accepting the risks, they opt against the safety expenditure.

Going back to the OP's question, I think it's been addressed. OEM reclining recaro's aren't optimum - there's evidence provided that they could indeed fail you in the right circumstance so the choices to make and the risks to accept or not are down for you to decide
 
Iv have decided to sell the seat after looking at that video and will get a sparco corsa seat. Cheers for the help :)

The accident itself is not a freak accident, at least everyone has lost the back end when they venture out on track. The freak bit is the seat snapping. There are a lot of these Recaros going about, ek9s,ITRs, evos all have them fitted.
Don't get me wrong I'm all about safety. I would rather spend my money on a seat or a good helmet rather than braces that do bugger all.:dance:
 
This is why I always thought that it is crazy money to give 500 pounds or more for a pair of recaro seats which is 15 years old and many of these come out from crashed cars. It might be a recaro but I would opt for a new sparco seat or anything similar. They go for crazy money especially in countries where they didn't have ek9 or dc2 imported.

Like the US :p They sell everything 'JDM' at astronomical prices. Not all people, but majority of them do.
