EK9 Winter Refresh 2020

Had the EK9 for about 2 years now. Done a fair amount of work on it, mods. etc.

The previous owner had the arches "done" but clearly it was a filler over ground down rust. And it's come back. This time it's a lot worse! They also did the arches in a colour a shade yellower than the rest of the car...

The metal on the passenger side arch has started to separate. Which means it's time to cut the arches out and weld new ones in.
This means the spoon stripes will have to go when the paint shop blends in the new paint with the rest of the car. Hoping to get lucky and not have too much of a fade line on the front end!..
Started by removing the rear plastics looks pretty good. Some wiring could do with a tidy up on the fog light but will get to that later on.

Pulled the seats and carpet out too so that I can give it a good clean when the car is off at paint.
Someone has made an odd bracket to hold the drivers side foot well cover on

The inner arches were starting to rust out so good job that I am getting this done now !

The passenger arch was similar to this..
Pulled the side skirts and the door trims off to save labour cost in the paint shop.
couple hours later. It's ready to go.

I need to get mine done mine are just starting to go but going to finish building garage first. R u getting genuine honda outer arches and wats the plan with the inner can u still get replacement inners

Arches will be cut and replaced with OE like parts.
Inners will have to be made from replacement metal. it's only a small part so not a big deal.

If its the arches that I think you mean, they're good quality pieces. Have the recess for the side moulding as well so in theory could chop out all the current metal and replace.

So, the EK9 is back from paint Spoon sports stripes have gone. They may make a return soon, once the rest of the work is done.

The lighting in the garage does not help the colour. but out in the day it's perfect Champ white. The weather was a tad miserable so wanted to get it put away asap.
Started to work on some wiring, the alarm install was a little messy (done back in 08/09 when the car was brought in from Japan)

There was also an old Front fog light harness that had been messed with / left just hanging in the dash, so I removed that.
Untaped all the old electrical tape off the alarm harness, I hate the stuff once it gets like a year old all the adhesive gets everywhere - not a fun time. Will re-tape it with proper loom tape. Also lots of shoddy twist and tape joints for things like the alarm siren and door solenoids. Which I will re-terminate with proper 4 and 2 pin plugs. That way, if I ever pull the dash apart again, I will not have any issues with wiring. The rear foglight was also poorly wired in so that will also get fixed.

After pulling the tape off and re routing some cables. I am left with this. The two alarm boxes can be hidden within the dash and fog light wiring can be put in a box, never to been seen again.

How are you going to do the fog light and wiring? Mine has broken for some reason and I fancy routing it into the cluster to save having the awful light hanging down

Front foglight wiring? (Bit connecting to the lamps themselves) I've tucked the loom into the wings of the car and cable tied them up. The car never came with the lights themselves and had just the plugs floating in the engine bay.
As for the interior wiring, It's two plugs from the fusebox and then one small single wire plug behind the fusebox and then the loom will come out

Rear fog, typically people use one of the reverse light holders with a red bulb.
MOT requirement is one reverse light and one fog
take a single wire from the fusebox accessory ports with an inline use run a wire (as neatly as you like) back to one of the reverse bulbs, cut the live to that bulb and put the new wire in place. put a red bulb in place of the reverse light
I presume you have a switch in place currently etc?

Yeah but it's a right mess. Got 3 connectors but assume I only need 2, one for live and one for earth?

The switch will, you need to ground the switch so the light on the switch turns on and works. (not sure if MOT requirement)
The bulb will only need two, yes.

It's been a little while!! - With lockdowns and other poor weather it's been a pain to get out and actually do something productive!!
I managed to strip any flaky underseal off the bottom of the car and treat any rust.

Sadly there were spots like this all over the place - A lot of it had not adhered to the car properly so left places where moisture could get in.
It wasn't anything more than surface rust, though which is a good thing.
There has been previous attempts at welding the floor on this car but clearly someone missed a spot under the drivers seat

After cutting it out and finding that all the other bits of the still are still good I cleaned up the rot that was there and tacked a new bit of metal in

This was lapped over the existing sill and welded up. Then put a floor piece in and welded that up all the way around

The pictures are not the best. I have since seam-sealed the welds up.
The rear arches were re sealed up - I have since gone over the brake lines and removed any over spray (I should have covered those up)

Whilst all that was being done I had send my Trailing arms and bolts and rear callipers off for refurb
Sadly you can't get the ABS sensor housings anymore from Honda anymore so this will have to do - It looks a lot better than it did.

The gold Zinc finish should contrast well with the Black powder coat of the trailing arms.

Rear callipers were done by Bigg Red - They did a very good job on these considering they were all pitted and had a few coats of paint on them!

Refitted the rear bar and replaced the fuel tank straps - they were a bit corroded and as you can still get them new, they may as well be replaced.

New hardware as I doubt I would be able to split those hooks apart judging by what they look like.

Hopefully I can start piecing back the suspension this weekend and get the rear lights and bumper back on.
