Evening fella's. I no this has been covered a million times and believe me ive read them all. But im in a dilemma, I can get three types of oil for nothing and unsure which one to go for. The oils are: Shell helix HX7 10W-40, Shell ultra 5w-40 and Mobil 1 ESP 0w30. My car is a EM1 with a healthy engine (only 47000 miles on the clock). I cover very low mileage with most of them commuting the temp is barely at operating temp when I get to work.
what would you go for if any lads?
cheers.

Shell helix 10-40w is a really good quality oil. I have used this stuff in all my b series hondas. Really quietens down the engine and I felt engine was more responsive. Like most good oils it has some clever cleaning detergents to help clean the engine. I tend to change oil every 3-4 k.

As your in the uk 10-40 is the correct grade as recommended by honda dont use anything less or else it be too thin.

Also its not good to run engine on very short trips consistently as it cause sludge build up in the engine. Your oil temperature will not reach optimum working temperature let alone your water.

Cheers mate. yea I understand short journey's don't do your car much good I tend to 'power decoat' every few miles.

I think the mobil is out of the question due to the fact is was made with modern engines in mind. My only worry with the 10w-40 helix stuff is its semi synth which will play on mind. If it really matters im not 100% sure. Another worry I have is using a different oil from what used last time. Im not sure if this matters either??.

semi is fine, dont worry.
Mine was run on 5-40 by prev owner, now its 10-40 its perfectly fine.
Think your being paranoid more than anything :)

Is that fully or semi synth??

It is semi mate, a lot of people on here prefer to use semi as well on older engine so I wouldn't worry about using semi or changing your oil from what was previously in it :nice:

i just chancge it 400km ago and use castrol magnatech 10w-40 semi. untill now iam very hapy with it. the engine noise is much better and smooth. my friend on his dc 2 use it the last time he change it and he is happy too

Cheers boys! Great feedback as per. Your right for some reason im always paranoid about oil. Probably ocd more than anything! Ive opted for the 10w-40's semi. Will be interesting to see if i notice a difference from last years 5w-30's fully synth, most likely i wont but we will see.

B series - 10w40 semi synth Castrol GTX

K series - 5w40 fully synth Castrol Edge

i wouldn't run anything else in either.

My B20 uses the same oil as my E46 M3. Castol TWS motorsport 10W60 which is the OEM oil for M-series vehicles. works well.
