about to put the gearbox back in my car this evening but im not sure its selecting all the gears properly. the selector goes up and down into 3 noticible slots and when its in the middle one you can rotate it slightly and move it up and down for another two clicks. is this the way it should be as i forgot to check this motion before stripping the box apart! :damn2:

From what you have described mate that is how it should be!

You crack on & get it back on the car!

What have you done to it??? Just out of curiosity.

changed to an m factory lightweight flywheel and swapped over there 4.7 final drive. Its a balls of a job in the shed by yourself let me tell you. Just a bit worried as its all whent suprisingly easy so far! :x:I'll post up some pictures later if all goes well. not holding my breath at the moment though.

how hard was it to swap the final drive?? did you need a press for this or did you need any other tools other than the usual items

If you use a screwdriver in the roll pin hole on the selector shaft and everything is working correctly then you should be able to select every gear with the box out of the car.

With the selector in the neutral position (this is the position that the shaft will rotate anti-clock and clock-wise freely) straight forward is 4th gear, straight back is 3rd. Then you should be able to (when the shaft is back in neutral position) turn it anti-clockwise and be able to select forward and backwards to get 1st,2nd gears. Then obviously turn it clockwise and back and forward again to select 5th,reverse

If you can't select all those gears then dont put it back in the car, TRUST ME. I have been there and hoped that somehow when it was in the car that all the gears would start selecting, only to have to rip it all back out again.

My problem was that the shaft locking nut was too tight not allowing one of the syncro hubs to move up and down but you didn't have to strip the shafts, correct?

another thing that can cause the gears to not select is if you forget to put the washer back on the hollow bolt that contains a ball bearing and spring and ends up jamming the ball bearing against the selector fork.

Is it just me reading his first post wrong or is that what he has discribed????

We all know there is six gears to select, forward & back in the middle & the same for when it is rotated clockwise & anti clockwise.

Hope this dont come across as me being an arse because it ant ment that way.:secret: (i know how things can come across in the wrong way when your typing)

LOL you are right JIMBOB! I actually read it wrong thinking that when Elchuck said that it moves into 3 slots that he was only getting it into 3 gears!

Now that I took my time to read it properly, it sounds like everything is working as it should, good work!

Hope it all goes back fine for you mate, good choice of mods!

Good advice from other members also who have first hand experience.
