Gearbox Problems

I have a 96 EK4 and last week i noticed when downgearing on a spirited drive was prooving to be a little more difficult than usual only in 2nd and noticed a very slight crunch when changing up from 1st to 2nd every so often. I intending on changing the oil soonish but then thursday it was very hard to change gear going up through the gears at any speed above 50ish, but mainly 3rd, 4th, 5th and downgearing was getting worse too.

Friday afternoon i intended on changing the oil at work but i didnt have time so just topped it up with some Land Rover MTF94 which i used in my MK2 CRX that cured all the crunching as recommended on CRX-UK. Put a litre in not knowing how much oil was in the box. Drove home from work with no improvement. Got home and slowly put another litre in the box and it went down easy which was worrying. Spoke to a friend and he said that possibly lack of oil had possibly caused some damage ie seized perhaps? Not something i wanted to hear really...

Saturday afternoon i drove to Banbury to pick up a friend to drive to Reading and my hopes were that fresh oil would maybe free it up a touch but unfortunately it was worse still in those 3 gears...was so hard to get into gear, forcing it in gear for 90miles my arm ached like mad lol. When i got into reading, dropping it into second from any higher gears was the hardest to get in even at 30ish and then when pulling away from a slow roll the clutch felt very strange and juddered a touch and sort of popped up a little. Hard to explain but no other gears did this. On the drive home going up the gears at various speeds seemed to have improved and it goes in fine without having to force it even at high rpm, not very smooth but goes in as it used to. Only problem now is the downgearing to 3rd but mainly 2nd is the biggest issue.

I have ordered some gearbox addative from American Technology as recommended by someone at work and reading the details for the product on their site it could help it fingers crossed but im not really holding my breathe to be honest. After putting it in im going to give it a week or two and see if there is any improvement. If not another gearbox is going to be needed:((

So extending loan and purchasing an ITR/CTR box, some form up uprated clutch and flywheel along with new release bearing, bolts and so on as i might aswell do a proper job and get it all done at the same time. Also probably doesnt help the feeling of the pedal and changes as one of the engine mounts as gone so shudders when pulling away so i might aswell buy uprated mounts too lol.

Anyone ever experienced the same kind of thing or heard of it?

Sorry for the essay too lol

I got a crunch at high rpms going from 2nd into 3rd. The Syncros have been worn and apparentley its a very common thing with Honda gearbox's!

Like you said, im gonna uprate mine to an lsd box and uprate flywheel etc!

mine is sometimes a pain coming down the box goin into 2nd and 1st can be tough sometimes box oil ?

Yeah i know about syncro problems. There is hardly any crunching at all, just a pain to get it into second mainly. Thats about the only gear now that is causing the problems. 3rd has improved from what it used to be. Its far from smooth going in but it goes in without hassle pretty much. All gears have improved since the oil has gone in apart from second which hasnt really changed. Going up through the gears is fine but its just that gear coming down. Hopefully this additive improves it further and cures it but we`ll see.

We had a look at it on the ramps at lunch to see if maybe the linkage was knackered but thats fine, only thing was the nut and bolt that holds the shift lever to the linkage was a bit too loose so we tightened that up a touch but made no difference.

Yep, it came with a skunk2 shifter, i know they`re a cause of knackered syncro`s over time. Cant remember from the reciepts when previous owner had it fitted. You think that could be the cause from what i`ve described?

EDIT: Just looked at the reciept and it was fitted in july last year...

does the short shifter not sometimes catch on the exhaust or something along those lines? Check your exhaust is still on all its hangers etc?

Very Long shot but you never know

Closest point to the exhaust the linkage/shifter gets is about an inch ish. Doesnt touch anything in any gear. It used to touch the heatshield when i first got it but i bent that out of the way so its fine now.

Not sure mate its just when i had my short shifter i use to struggle getting it in gears sometimes, like you said, it was mainly 2nd too, thats why i asked. I put mine back to stock and i prefer that now!

hhm might try it tomorrow and put the standard back on and see what it feels like then.
