Hi guys, i have a honda civic EK4 VTI-S and when it hits 5500RPM at the VTEC it pumps out a stupid ammount of black smoke out the exhaust, the car also seems to be drinking oil, i filled it up just under 2 weeks ago and and its done the lot already only covering up to 300 miles. I've check for oil leaks everything looks fine no leaks from the sump also no oil left on my driveway.

Any suggestion ??

cheers

Is it standard or modded?
Oxygen sensor faulty?
Cheap chipped ecu?
air filter blocked?
Oil too thin, use a 10w40?
Good luck Dunx

Yep the car is compleatly standard at the moment, using 10w40 castrol oil, i have no idear what it could be i only know a little about motors at the moment.

Get someone to drive behind you during the day to see for sure what colour the smoke is, blue smoke can look black in the rear view mirror.

I'd say the Piston rings or valve stem oil seals though, common enough problem.

-you could try another brand of oil, such as motul or fuchs xtr, stay 10-40 semi synthetic, some engines just dont seem to get on with certain oils, i have found castrol to be one of the worst oils i've used in a few of my cars.

-does your car run at correct operating temp?

also:
remove your intake pipe, open the throttle by hand and look for signs of oil in the inlet manifold, could be a faulty pcv valve

you could also get a compression test done.

does it run at correct temp, where does the needle sit on the gauge?

if it runs to cold it will overfuel, and burn oil.

Ill take a picture of the gauge when its warmed up ill post in asap, if this is the problem whats the fix ??

Ok i drove home from work this morning with a mate following me, he says when its in VTEC the smoke is grey ???.

sorry b16 mini forgot that picture, the needle sits at half way on the temp gauge mabey 1 bar down from the middle.

the needle being just under half way is normal temp,

the grey smoke is probably a mixture of black and blue, when was your oil last changed? how many miles ago?

As far as i know it would of been the last service which was around 60,000 ish i think. so ill get a service done and see what happens. any idear where can i get a genuine honda full service kit from ?? there is no local dealers in my area.

so you have had the same oil for over 10 000 miles :nono::nono::nono::nono::((

Good point Olly, being that these N/A Honda engines love to rev, good quality oil & regular (3-4.5k mile) oil changes are CRUCIAL.....I religiously do an oil change at 4.5k miles & use Mobil 1:nice:

Grey smoke doesnt sound too tragic anyhow....if the car has a standard air filter id clean/replace that as well as cleaning all the TB/intake pipe with carb cleaner...especially if it hasnt been serviced for so long.....

If the car was burning a serious amount of oil the smoke would be noticably blue & your following friend would have smelled it immediately....

Ok, ill get a full service done ASAP i've only owned the car 3 weeks i was just going by the service book.

Thanks for you help guys :nice:
