Hi Guys,

Today I was attempting to finish off my engine and torquing up the cam cap bolts ( in sequence) and only to about 20ft/lbs and then this happened!!

Looks like it has sheared flush with the head (at the end of the thread) so I doubt I will be able to get a set of mole grips on it.

What shall I do? Presumably it needs to be drilled out, but how can that be done without ensuring no swarf falls back into the head?

I want to be able to take as few steps back as possible to sort this if I can.

I'm guessing the machine shop will sort this out...but it will be a right hassle to put the whole block in the car and take down there!

Needles to say I will get a replacement bolt from Honda.

Thanks in advance

Ezy out,
Just lay out some sheet around it and tape it so you catch everything.
And Hoover as you drill.

Can't see any other alternative

Ezy out Is a good idea. Hoover with the smaller nose type nossle on the end.
Hard to believe 20ftlbs did that!

Cheers guys for the quick response, sounds like a good method to me, I may see if I can throw in a magnet to the mix as well.

Can't believe it myself, it just didnt want to tighten that much, it never really bit, and then..that happened....

Oh right. Must have been weakened before.

I've done this many times believe me. I always recommend changing those bolts if possible.

You need to either drill and easy out it out or get a nut welded onto the snapped part and unscrew it out. Be careful that you catch all the metal shaving if you use easy outs.

Ended up taking the engine to the machine shop...ended up costing £30 but he did the job with a quick turn around. There was a tiny bit of swarf which made its way through the duck tape.....i just ran the magnetic sump plug over it so fingers crossed i got it all!.

Time will tell.

Clean the head down with a jet wash. Don't risk it. It doesn't take much to ruin the whole engine.

Ahhh rich, whyyyyyy!! I was afraid you would say something like that. .

Deep down I know that would be the best thing to do. But I cant disassemble the whole thing again and waste a brand new head gasket etc. I may sound stupid but I havnt got the patience....instead im gonna be a mavrick and hope for the best.....worst case scenario it fails and I decide to get a k20 lol.
