So we were in convoy going to play footy yesterday mornin and when we got there the guy that was following me said I had plumes of white smoke coming out of the exhaust, but only when we were going slow. One of the lads is a mechanic he reckoned it might be the coolant? Whatever it is it needs sorting out. Any ideas what it could be guys?

Things I have already checked:

-Coolant level is at minimum when engine is cold, in between min and max when hot.
-Oil level is fine, although it needs topping up regularly is this normal? I use 0w30 castrol.

Any help greatly appreciated.

i think...and correct me if im wrong
white smoke = water/coolant
blue smoke = oil
black smoke = fuel

so could be coolant system mate

it's so strange that the car smoke when you go slow...it's normal that smoke when you go faster

you said you have to top up oil once in a while?.. is there an oil leak?.. 'maybe' oil is leaking into to the compulsion champers?

Yes,

Was it cold weather, maybe the boy doesnt really know anything? Would'nt see this as being anything to worry about.

White smoke IS water/coolant related OR in cold weather will be condensation which worries people.........

Worse case scenerio head gasket failer...... Does your water bottle over heat at all?

Are there any leaks around where the head gasket is?

This is just a possible problem, not definite

x 2

does it stop once the car and its exhaust has heated up to temp?

my crx did this all the time and it was just condensation inside the pipe that would evaporate and stop once upto temp.

Have you always used 0w30 oil?, that oil is very thin and would usually burn faster in your engine so u could get that smoke on a usual basis......try using a thicker oil and see if the problem persists....if it does, then it's the coolant.....if it stops then it was just the really thin oil burning out!

do the usual checks, check your spark plugs for discolouration, compression test and check for head gasket leak with a block tester.

most likely be coz it was cold like Marcus Butlerus said.

prob jus condensation, my ek9 does it when u leave it for a day or too, take it down a straight piece of road and get the exhaust hot. gets the moisture out. if you got a after market (5zigen or HKS) made of stainless steel u find its condensation. i have a 5zigen system and my brother has a HKS on his ek9. 99.9% its moisture.
