Hey guys

Had my B20 built up, running in the motor now for 2000KM, and the small breather filter started to smoke quite a bit esp when u rev it up, in doing so the dip stick is short, any advice on what can be causing this, there are no oil leaks anywhere as i have checked the block for leaks after the build was done.

The thing is its now taking a pint of oil on every 200km, just want to know you guys thoughts on this.

Here are the specs
b16a vtec head
b20 bottom end
high comp pistons, compression is sitting at 11.0
acl race bearings
hasting race rings
polished crank
63mm exhaust
going to change the manifold next week to a 4-2-1 system (47mm-53mm-57mm) system, currenty i have the standard one on. (Also jus wondering if the problem can be related to the exhaust manifold being small and not able to expell the gases fast enough.

Pic attached of engine bay with breather filter.

nice induction :D

tell me, when you did your build, did you re-do your b16 head(stem seals etc?)

@ Skar thanks, bought it off the oke i know, as u can see he took good care of it...hehehe.

Yeah did the cam seals and distributor o ring as well.

Sounds like something isnt right internally. Run compression test (and leak down if possible) and post up the results. Sounds like a poor ring seal to me. I don't understand "in doing so the dip stick is short" ????

Hi Rich, what I mean is the oil level on the stick is short when checking the oil. Will get the compression test done today and see if the compression is the same in all 4 cylinders

yo man, the valve stem seals are important. loss of oil can be due to either poor installation for a stem seal(being damaged by use of a socket) or if they where replaced that may be the prob. but i do agree that it may be rings, so let us know whats going on after you do the test.

also, when you did the build, did you check bore clearances?

If smoke is coming out of his breath filter then its most likely crankcase pressure related. Meaning its piston/ring related. The stem seals could be another problem though if they wasnt installed correctly. I use a long reach 12mm socket with a extension. You only need to put a bit of body weight on the extension when installing the seal. A hammer is a NO.

Hey, so do you guys know one on other ?

I've had the exact problem on a D16, unfortunatly it sounds like on of the rings has gone. The compression test will come in low, but more than likely within a usable range. 130 - 150psi

If your compression is good...it could be Blowby. Breather kit may be needed as the oem system can hardly hold up with a stock EK9.

I have a B18C5 12:1 fully built, but I had the same issue, breather kit solved my situation.

Did you get the compression check done, can you share?

That could help, but if he's just reving it up on the spot there should be hardly any blowby (crankcase pressure) what so ever really... Its when you put load on the engine it starts causing problems normally.

Hey guys jus waiting on compression test results, breather kit ? where can I get one from ? please assist

Hey guys, didnt get a chance to get the test done as yet, something came up. will get it done asap. Upon reving the car, it does NOT smoke at the back, only the small breather filter, going to look for the breather kit, guys does the size of the oil catch can matter ?

So it does not smoke at the filter but does at the exhaust ? You need to do a compresion and leak down test really before we can go any further.

No, it does not smoke at the exhaust, the breather filter in the engine bay smokes. But also deciding on getting the oil catch can, or breather kit.

You should have a breather kit on there anyway so get one fitted asap. I'd still do a compression and leak down test though. It shouldnt be smoking at idle/low load really. Does it missfire at idle ?
