I took my car to snetterton on Monday and after a couple of 20minute sessions I noticed oil appearing on top of the gearbox, not enough to cause a puddle but enough for me to be concerned.

Jacked it up and had a good look but couldn't find anything obvious wrong and still engaged gear fine. I took it back out but this time round no sign of oil but 2 sessions later there is a puddle sitting on top of the gearbox.

I have never had any trouble with them before, any ideas what might be causing it ? It was quite a warm day and the car was getting a hard time so the only thing I can assume is maybe the oil got to hot ?

I'd guess its over filled. When was it last changed? How much oil did you put in?

I changed it a few weeks before tracking it and it had probably done 100miles prior to that. I think it took just over 2l from memory, I filled it up until it came out of the drain hole.

Just over 2l sounds about right, I take it the car was level when you were draining/refilling it?

did you remove the old oil before you put the new oil in? what drain hole did you fill it to? there is a hole at the bottom of the box to drain it and then one higher up to fill it. just over 2ltr sounds right enough.

I replaced the drivers side shaft as it had snapped the outter cv joint so oil was drained and I replaced driveshaft seal on the gearbox and refilled with oil. I filled it through the vss hole until it drained out of the bung beside the drive shaft as I do every time I have changed gearbox oil in the past.

I have ran the car on axle stands tonight to see if there is any pressure coming through the gearbox breather but I can't feel anything and after de-greasing the gearbox it's yet to show up again so I'm slightly puzzled.

Thanks

By gearbox breather you mean the little grill that's on top if it yes?

Is it definitely gearbox oil ? When I had a leaky dizzy seal the oil sat on top of the gearbox.

We'll from what I can see it looks as thou it's coming out of here.....

And you can just About make out in the pictures where the oil was sitting.

Yeah it's definitely gearbox oil, there is no signs of it running down the block and it smells of gearbox oil.

Thanks

What gear oil are you using?
