The oil pressure has dropped on my b20vtec, i havnt had it running that long and it has dropped quite quickly in time. More so in the cold weather.
When i 1st got it running it used to read
50-60psi on cold start
then once warm 15psi on idle and 60-70psi over 3k
but now its 30psi on cold start
still 15psi on idle but doesnt really go further than 40-50 just over 3k
(havnt really took it much higher as im worried, just parked it up)
what would you guys suggest could be the problem.
ive checked for leaks, none that i can see, sender is new.
Im going to do an oil change this weekend (which oil and filter do you reccomend?)
I will take the cut the old filter open to look for any shavings and such.
would i also be best to take the pan off or will looking in the filter be enough?
any help would be great cus im abit scared!

which oil pump are your running? B18 type r oil pump?

Would have been a good idea to fit a vtec oil pump. What type of oil press gauge is it? Assuming oil level is ok then it's either a problem developed with your oil press gauge or sender unit or the oil pump itself.

I have a swoosh gauge.
Oil level is fine. I'm using 10w40 hilux oil I think it is. Was recommended by a mechanic friend. I have seen people running b20 pumps with no issues, but I should have fitted a vtec one. Is there any other reason there might be for low pressure. One day it was fine and the next it's low?

Did you have a look at the bearings before you put it together ? Did you change the rod bolts to arp without having the rod relined/honed ?

Thats strange it doubled my post. What about the bearings ? Did you check them ?

When you say its droped quickly how quick are you talking ?

Over the space of a couple of days I noticed it. I had abit of oil seeping from rocker cover so I took it off and added some sealent and then I've noticed it's low. Not saying that's the reason but that's just when I noticed it. I have parked my car up for now till I get chance to do an oil change.

Quite low values anyways, my b16b is about 22 on idle and 80 above 3k

that's with hamp filter and castrol gtx 10w40 and a SPA digital gauge

I am going to fit hamp filter and swap to gtx 10w40 on Sunday to see what happens

The relief valve in oil pump may be stuck open for some reason. Going to need to remove the oil pump to inspect it. Good time to fit a vtec oil pump.

How much do pumps cost? If my pump had gone I would have no pressure right?
I read somewhere that they don't gradually go they just go!!!

Do a search on yahoo there's loads of places what sell them. As for the price, it will cost a fraction of a new engine.

How much do pumps cost?
...$120-$175 USD

If my pump had gone I would have no pressure right?
...correct, gone=no pump=no pressure or oil.

...some do, some don't.

If it is your oil pump that is starting to fail, the heart of the engine, replace it with a vtec oil pump.
Why didn't you fit one to the engine when you were working on it? One would think if your going for a b20 vtec, its going to rev higher than the b20 oil pump is manufactured and designed for, its easy when the engine is out of the bay, and they are not extremely expensive at all.

Anywho--hope you get it sorted out. :nice:
