Did a small change to the OEM air intake box on my 2000 street hatch.
I already had replaced the passwordJDM intake with the OEM box months ago, but I only installed the box itself without the snorkel tube. This setup was taking in warm/hot air from the bottom of the OEM air box opening only.

Over the weekend I added back in the snorkel tube.
Cut the snorkel tube at the bend, which was cut at a strange angle; so that more of the opening was facing the front of the car.
This allowed me to use the OEM tube for cold air intake.
It also lowered the intake noise level which I was after originally with the OEM intake box itself, so this really helped in achieving that goal.

To better secure the cut snorkel to the intake box I used zip tied to clamp the rubber around the snorkel tightly.
The tube already had a hole in it which will help with preventing water ingesting from the tube itself. [acts like the AEM check valve on their CAI solution]

The area which the snorkel is cut at is in the perfect spot for taking in good cold air but still well protected from water spray and road debris.

For those looking for a "no cost solution" to a good working CAI, this is it! "Poor mans CT IceBox" This also works better than the pwjdm whale **** intake.

Here is the part of the snorkel that I did not use

Get one of the BPI (or Blox from H-tune if you want cheap) velocity stacks and fit that to the end of your snorkle tube. it WILL make a noticeable difference as the cut open end is actually a restriction to airflow.

This is basically what I'm planning to do with the ek4 as its missing the snorkle tube (I was going to fab one from 2.5" ABS guttering downpipe and a heatgun!) with the blox stack from H-Tune.

Thank you Puggie. This is where I am going to stop on the modification of the intake. I really don't want to spend monies on this part of the car.

But for others reading this, I think that Puggie has a valid point about the v-stack at the snorkel end of this setup. My CT Ice box on the track car has a v-stack at the end as well as within the box itself at the filter connection, duel v-stack setup, very nice. But thats a different topic and costs monies.

The pwjdm whale **** has a v-stack as well. But with it being under the hood its only taking in hot air more efficiently...lol. With that said, the pwjdm air intake with v-stack when compared to this OEM altered setup is less effective than the OEM box setup as I have it above...without a v-stack!

All this hype about intakes is really about marketing...to me that is... All you need to do is tap into cold air at the front of the car; high pressure area.
done and done~!

nice write up.. i have done something similar myself, but with a flexi tube located somewhere different. i will try and get some photos.

Cool, yeah post up some photos of your setup.

Im actually going to try this sort-a setup on my track car. Via CT IceBox sans the v-stack elbow.
